Serving Aboard Doyle
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class
Kenneth J. Howard, son of John H.
and Phyllis Howard of Quail Drive,
Supply, is halfway through a six
month deployment to the Mediter
ranean Sea aboard the guided mis
sile frigate USS Doyle , homeported
in Mayport, Fla.
Howard began the deployment by
participating in the 50th anniversary
of D-Day with a visit to Portsmouth,
England. While off the coast of
Normandy, France, USS Doyle
steamed past President Bill Clinton
as part of an international flotilla,
honoring World War II veterans who
had participated in the largest am
phibious landing in history.
He then traveled to the Mediter
ranean Sea where USS Doyle served
as the flagship for NATO's Mediter
ranean fleet. The guided missile
frigate later entered the Adriatic Sea
off the coast of Bosnia, where How
ard and USS Doyle crewmembers
participated in United Nations oper
Howard also visited Rota, Spain,
and Brindisi and Civitavecchia,
Italy, during the deployment.
The 1977 graduate of Lisbon
(N.Y.) Central High School joined
the Navy in June 1977.

Brooks recently completed a six

Oceans aboard the aircraft carrier
USS Carl Vinson, homeported in
Brooks is the son of Sam P.
Brooks of Leland.
While deployed, he traveled near
ly 44,000 miles aboard the ship, vis
iting Australia, Hawaii, Hong Kong,
Japan, Singapore, Tasmania and
United Arab Emirates.
The crew completed more than
7,100 aircraft launches and recover
ies from the flight deck of the 1,000
foot-long nuclear-powered aircraft
carrier during the six-month voyage.
They also hosted nearly 4,000 U.S.
and foreign civilian dignitaries, gov
ernment officials, senior military of
ficers and other guests. While
ashore, the crew took part in a vari
ety of community relations projects
ranging from painting schools and
orphanages to visiting hospitals and
conducting ship tours.

Tom Bonniol Heads Friends Of Library
Tom Bonniol became president of
the Friends of the Library, Rourk
Branch, at a meeting Sept. 14 at
Atlantic Telephone Membership
