V/accamaw Warfare
At The OK Corral
This is the kind of football game you usually see near the end of the
season, not the beginning.
Nevertheless, West Brunswick and South Columbus will go toe-to-toe
Friday night as the Waccamaw Conference high school football season
kicks off.
The Trojans and Stallions are
among the favorites to challenge for
the Waccamaw Conference champi
onship this year, so the game is an
important one for both teams.
Each squad enters Friday night's
clash at the OK Corral with a record
of 3-1, but the similarities stop there.
West Brunswick relies on team speed,
while South Columbus depends on
size and strength.
It'll be interesting to sec which team wears out first. The Stallions will
try to pound the life out of the Trojans, while the Trojans try to run the
Stallions ragged. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will likely win.
If South Columbus has one thing going for it Friday night, it will be the
absence of Steve Holmes.
The former Trojan running back was not only a major contributor on
West Brunswick's state championship teams in 1992 and 1993, he ab
solutely killed the Stallions.
In two games against South Columbus, including a state playoff game
in 1992 and last year's regular-season tilt. Holmes rushed for 397 yards and
scored tight touchdowns.
Dogs At Mustangs
While the Trojans and Stallions face off in the Waccamaw Conference
opener, there's an equally important game on tap Friday night in the Three
Rivers Conference.
South Robeson, which outscored its first three opponents 110-0, will
host defending league champion St. Pauls. 1 know it's only the first league
game, but this one could decide the conference title.
St. Pauls, under head coach Dwight Harrell since the departure of Yogi
Hickman, has beaten some strong non-conference opponents in Fayetteville
Cape Fear, James Kenan and South Columbus.
South Robeson, on the other hand, has yet to be tested. Coach Mike
Brill's Mustangs have beaten Hobbton. East Columbus and Parkwood.
It will be interesting to sec what effect the relatively easy early sched
ule ? not to mention a two-week layoff ? will have on South Robeson The
Mustangs are the sccond-ranked 1 A team in the state.
Raleigh Bound
If my Subaru holds up. I'm going to Raleigh Saturday night to check
out the undefeated N.C. State University football team
A pair of former West Brunswick gridiron stars will be involved when
the Wolf pack takes on Western Carolina.
Phillip "Fumblerooski" Johnson is a freshman defensive lineman at
Western Carolina. The 2-1 Catamounts are considered one of the top 20
Division 1 A A trams in the nation
Jimmy Grissett. a sophomore flanker at N.C. State, has made four pass
receptions for 17 yards in the Wolfpack's first two gamer. State has
knocked off Bowling Green and Clcmson.
I'm also trying to pull off an Oct. 8 trip to Columbia for the South
Carolina-East Carolina game It's hard work, but somebody has to do it.

Scorps Stomp Lejeune 21-0
BY DOUG RUTTER
Lamont Southcrland rushed for a 115 yards
and scored a touchdown as North Brunswick de
feated Lxjcunc 21-0 in a non-conference high
school football game last Friday in Leland.
After a scoreless first half, Coach Garry
Bishop's Scorpions broke the ice in the third pe
riod on quarterback Ryan Brew's 45-yard touch
down pass to Andre Mosley.
Mike Edge added a 6-yard touchdown run lat
er in the third quarter, and Southerland scam
pered \2 yards for a touchdown in the fourth
quarter to close out the scoring.
"We played well. We could have played bet
ter, but I'll take 21-0 any day," Bishop said. "I
think we had more kids contributing. In the past,
it's been one or two kids doing everything. It
was more of a team game."
North Brunswick's offense sputtered in the
first two quarters, but it started producing in the
third quarter after coavnes made adjustments in
the blocking schemes at halftime.
Mosley scored after catching a short pass,
breaking a couple tackles and avoiding several
other defenders on his way to the end zone.
Mosley also had two interceptions on defense.
Brew completed 4 of 10 pass attempts for 94
yards.
With his performance Friday, Southerland in
creased his season totals to 49 carries for 367
yards. The senior running back is averaging
nearly 7.5 yards per carry.
North Brunswick's defense, which forced for.r
turnovers and held Lejeune to 78 total yards of

offense, has yielded just 28 points in three
games.
"We've been pretty stingy. We still need a
couple more guys to come around. We still can
improve on defense," Bishop said. "The defense
is starting to play itself into shape a little bit."
North Brunswick improved its record to 2-1
for the season, while Lejeune fell to 1-2. The
Scorpions open Three Rivers Conference play
this Friday with a home game against Fairmont.
The Golden Tornadoes (0-3) are coming off a
36-0 loss to Whitcville. Fairmont also has suf
fered losses to West Columbus (37-6) and East
Columbus (20-0).
Despite the 0-3 record. Bishop said North
Brunswick will have to play well to have a
chance of winning.
"I've watched them on tape, and they're not a
bad ball club. They've given up some big plays
They're big, and they've got a good quarterback
who we'll have to contain," Bishop said.
"We'll have to play well. They're probably
the best team we've played so far even though
they're 0-3," Bishop said.
While North Brunswick seeks it's first confer
ence win since 1989, the g?me of the week in
the Three Rivers Conference will take place in
Rowland.
South Robeson (3-0) hosts St. Pauls (3-0) in a
contest that could ultimately determine the
league champion. South Robeson is the second
ranked 1 A team in the state.
In other league games. Red Springs will host
East Bladen while Bladenboro entertains Tar
Heel.
