Calabash Veterans Edge Murrells Inlet Team 1 0-8 The Calabash Veterans Golf As sociation defeated a team of Mu rTclls Inlet veterans, 10-8, in the fourth semi-annual challenge match held Sept. 1 1 at River Hills Country Club. Eighteen foursomes participated in the match play event. The format was better net ball of the twosome. Calabash won 10 matches. Murrells Inlet eight and there were two ties. Winning for Calabash were L.C. Bollinger and Jack Brady, Walt Benes and George O'Connell, Ed Jackson and Ernie Williams, Bob Herre and Alan Kletchka, Hal Riebesehl and Charlie Weber, Walt Lee and Bill Cook, Art Paige and Jack Brooks. Jack Gaines and Herb Oellerich, and Bob Davis and Jerry Falvey. Murrells Inlet winners were Bob Gaynor and John Batt, John Anderson and Ted Nissen, Fred Jordan and lan Hunter, Norm Baligerow and Bill Nuzum, Walt Mitchell and Bill Spadafora. Jack Piatt and John Hogan, and Whitey Wetherald and Frank Corrigan. Brierwood Ladies Nancy Bouldin posted a two-day total of 163 to win the championship flight in the Brierwood Ladies Golf Association Club Championship held Sept. 13 and 14. Bouldin shot 84 on the first day and followed it up with a sizzling 79 to capture the title. Bouldin opened the tournament with a birdie at the first hole and also had birdies six, seven and eight in the second round. Hilda Hall placed second in the championship flight with rounds of 86 and 82 for a 168 total. Doris Dunfee won the first flight with a 36-hole scorc of 172. She had rounds of 89 and 83. with second day birdies at the eighth and 14th holes. Bobbie Maples finished second in the first flight with 178. Her opening round of 93 included a birdie at the fifth hole, and Maples fired an 85 in the second round. In the second flight, Ruth Linder posted consecutive rounds of 100 to win by two strokes. Runner-up Joan Cowie had a 99 and 103. Other golfers reporting birdies in cluded Ann Hierman at the 10th and 16th holes, Betty Gabor and Nel Justice at the third, Margaret Wood at the 10th, Janice Owens at the 14th and Ginger Sugrue at the 16th. Foxy Ladies Betty Gabor, Lou Culp, Janice Owens and Margaret Wood shot 126 to win the Brierwood Foxy Ladies tournament last week at Lions Paw Golf Links. Second place went to the team of Nel Justice, Margaret Pingo, Bobbye Cordisco and Dot Crean with 129. Brierwood Men's Member-Guest John Cowie and son, John Cowie III, were the overall winners of the Brierwood Golf Club Men's Mem ber-Guest Tournament held Sept. 10 and 11. The Cowies defeated four other teams in a four-hole elimination playoff of the low net winners from each of the tournament's five flights. The tournament attracted 54 teams. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Rick Robinson at the third hole. Glen Schmaler at the ninth, Mike Cox at the 14th and John Cowie at the 17th. Carolina Shores Ladies Sally Manifold shot gross 90 and Ellen Rose had net 69 to lead the A Flight in the Carolina Shores Ladies Golf Association event last Thursday. In the B Flight, Jean Palmer fired the low gross of 100 and Dot Meader had low net with 81 . On a match of cards, Alice Abbene edged Joan O'Neill for low gross in the C Flight with 103. Jackie Distler had the low net of 71 and O'Neill was second with 72. Top finishers in the D Right were Inky Remais with gross 103 and Irene Crane with net 71. Cynthia Omundsen was second with net 73. Blanche Johnson, Palmer and Distler tied for low putts with 29 apiece. Reporting chip-ins were Palmer at the first hole, Remais at the fifth, Distler at the 11th and Lill Haupt at the 13th. Flo Warren birdied the 1 6th hole. Sea Trail Men Bob Perna fired net 60 to win the Sea Trail Men's Golf Association tournament last Tuesday on the Maples course. Runners-up were Dick Zinscr with 64, Ron Schadle and Ray Dillon with rounds of 70, and Ron Hayes and Bob Graham with scores of 71. Nifty Niners The Carolina Shores Nifty Niners hosted their Sea Trail Invitational Scramble last Tuesday at Lions Paw Golf Links. The team of Mary Helen Leisey, Pat Burkart, Ellen Ericksen and Marcy Norris took first place with a score of 43. Finishing second with 46 were Jane Taubel, Edna O'Connell and Jay Arlotta. Charlotte Martin, Mary Zanzalari, Audrey Card and Jane Abamo placed third with 48. Longes' drive winners were Jerri Moore and Molly Cox. Closest-to the-pin winners were Burkart and Martin. In the Nifty Niners' regular week ly tournament last Thursday, Erick sen the low gross of 61. Runners-up were Martha Mullis with 62 and Leisey with 63. Pat Healy had the low net of 31. She was followed by Leisey wiin net 39 and Taubel with 40. Ruth's Renegades Members of Ruth's Renegades group competed in a crossover tour nament last Thursday at Bay Tree and Brierwood golf courses. Top finishers at Bay Tree includ ed Madeline Mahony with net 25.5, Teddy Altreuter with 29 and Elaine Haddock with 29.5. Jean Romero had a birdie at the second hole. At Brierwood, Toni Kobos led the way with a score of net 25. Runners up were Elizabeth Carter with 26 and Marion Corbin with 29. Sue Baer chipped in at the 18th hole. Brierwood Men The team of Jerry Waller, Bob Sterner, Jack Causer and Jerry Wolff shot 139 to win the Brierwood Men's Golf Association tournament last Thursday. Teams counted one best ball on par 3s, two balls on par 4s and three balls on par 5s. The winners were 13 under par. Finishing second at .1 undcr-par 141 was the foursome of Dave Harper, Ncal McCall, Miles Um berger and Jerry Smith. On Sept. 12, the team of Bob Dolan, Matt Monaghan, Dick Anze lone and Norm Soucie shot 119 to win a best ball event at Brierwood. Finishing second with 120 was the ornyn of Dc?? Brierwood Ninettes Julie McCall, Kathy Stoll, Judy Durham and Pat Narazinski were the top four finishers in the Brierwood Ninettes tournament last Friday. Golfers counted scores on even numbered holes only. Kay Allwein. Joyce Rose and Narazinski tied for low putts with 15 apiece. McCall had 16. Allwein, Rose and McCall each made par at the third hole.
