VINCENT A. McGRATH Vincent A. McGrath of Calabash died Sept. 14 in Grand Strand Re gional Medical Center. Bom in Haskell, N.J., Aug. 28, 1920, he was a son of the late George Patrick and Anna Marie Irvin McGrath. Mr. McGrath was a special equip ment technician employed by New Jersey Bell Telephone for 39 years. He served with the Navy aboard the USS Wasp during World War II and received the Silver Star He was a communicant of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the VFW Post at Calabash and the Telephone Pioneers of America, Grand Strand Chapter. Survivors include his wife, Gloria Pace McGrath; a son, Thomas McGrath of Weston, Conn.; three daughters, Patricia A. Powers of Cinnaminson, N.J., Dareleen F. Florance of Midland Park, N.J. and Cynthia L. McGrath of Ramsey, N.J.; a brother, George T. McGrath of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister. Rcgina Conerly of Fairlawn, N.J.; 10 grand children and a great-grandchild. The funeral Mass was held Sept. 16 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach with the Rev. George Moy nihan officiating. Burial was in Brunswick Memorial Gardens in Shallotte. Memorials may be made to Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church Building Fund. HXX) Eighth Ave., North Mvrtie Beach, S.C. EVELYN B. WILSON Evelyn Beger Wilson. 86, died Sept. 13 in The Brunswick Hospital. Bom in Frankfort, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Julius and Julia Koepper Beger. Survivors include a daughter, Lorraine McConaghie of Ocean Isle Beach, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral was held Sept. 16 in the Chapel of Brunswick Funeral Service with the Rev. Jerry Lowery officiating. DAVID BRADLEY SMITH David Bradley Smith of Gordon Road, Wilmington, died Sept. 13 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was bom in Southport on July 30, 1%0, the son of Dorothy Stan ley Smith of Wilmington and the late William Joseph Smith. Surviving in addition to his moth er are his sisters, Nancy Fay of Easton, Maine, Joan Thorpe of Long Beach, Patti Morgan of Chapel Hill and Donna Malpass of Leland; a brother, Ricky Smith of Winston Salem; 11 nieces and nephews and one grandniece and two grand nephews. Funeral services were private. HARRY S. DAVIS Harry Shafter Davis, 93, of Shal lotte, died Sept. 13 in The Bruns wick Hospital. Born in Brunswick County, he was a son of the late John and Mary White Davis. He was a member of Sabbath Home Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Harry S. Davis Jr. of Supply, and a daughter, Jenette D. Moore of Shallotte. The funeral was held Sept. 15 in Sabbath Home Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. VIVIAN H. POWELL Vivian H. Powell, 79, of Village Point Road, Shallotte, died Sept. 15 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was a daughter of the late John Columbus and Cecil Hasty Hooks. Surviving are two sons, Dicky Powell and Jerry Powell, both ot Shallotte; a daughter, Jean Herring of Columbus, Ohio: a brother, Delmas Hooks of Whiteville; three sisters, Evelyn Inman, Bobbie Dick ens and Carol Brock, all of White ville; eight grandchildren and 11 great -grandch i Idren The funeral was held Sept. 17 in the Chapel of Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte. by the Rev. Mr. Daley was husband of Katie Ruth Daley of Shallotte; father of Donna, Raymond and Linwood Dal ey, all of Shallotte; and the grandfa ther of Larry Daley. GEORGE MARTIN CARROLL George Martin Carroll of Malmo Loop Road, Leland, died Sept. 18 at home. He was born in Southport on Nov. 23, 1944, son of Myrtle Lesh Carroll of Bolivia and tne late Erasus Carroll. He was a member of the Lewis Swamp Hunting Club in Winnabow. In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife, Edith Benton Carroll of the home; a son, William (Marty"! Robert Henry Maultsby of Old Ocean Highway, Bolivia, died Sept. 16 in The Brunswick Hospital. He was born in Brunswick County on April 18, 1912, a son of the late Robert Henry and Daisy Rourk Maultsby. He had retired from the N.C. Department of Trans portation Ferry Division. He was a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church, the N.C. Economic Dev elopment Board and the N.C. Envir onmental Resources Board. As an active Republican, he had held vari ous positions within the party. Surviving are his wife, Adria Arnold Maultsby; two daughters, Roberta M. Dosher and husband Richard of Southport and Rosalyn M. King and husband William of Bolivia; a brother, R.A. "Mult" Maultsby of Bolivia; a sister, Daisy Belle Harris of Di?*am; Five grand children and four great-grandchil dren. MARY MILDRED HAWES Mary Mildred Hawes, 93, of Ocean Highway East, Supply, died Sept. 17 at Ocean Trail Convales cent Center. She was born in Brunswick County on April 21, 1901, and was the daughter of the late Pinckney Sylvester and Laura Grimes Hawes. She was a member of Supply Bap tist Church. Mr. Packer was born in Wilm ington on Aug. 20, 1950, the son of Ruth Nichols Smith and the late Douglas E. Packer. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam. Surviving are his wife, Wanda Norman Packer of the home, his mother, Ruth Nichols Smith of five dsughtcrs, Rcbcccn Decker, Shannon Ray and husband Russell and Natalia Packer, all of Leland. WALTER LEE JOHNSON Walter Lee Johnson, 71, of 25th Sireei, Long Beach, died Sept. 15 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born May 12, 1923, in Winston-Salem, son of the late Orrin F. and Katie Mae Shumate Johnson. He attended Lexington City Schools and Appalachian State University and had been employed with Lex ington Fire Department, N.C. Divi sion of Marine Fisheries and Daniel Construction Co. of Southport. from which he retired. He moved to Long Beach in 1964 and was instrumental in forming the Long Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department and had served as chief of each. He was a member of the Long Beach Board of Commissioners from 1983-1987 and served on the Brunswick Resources and Development Commission from 1982-86. He was also a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving arc his wife. Charline Williams Johnson of the home; a son, Tim Johnson of Tucker. Ga.; two daughters, Cheryl J. Sadoti of Charleston and Denise J. Ocean Isle Beach, died Monday, Sept. 19, in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born on March 20, 1959, in Reidsville, a daughter of Gene Moore and Olive Si/emore Nelms. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a daughter. Mandv Woodall of Greenville, N.C.; her stepfather, Robert Nelms of Ocean Isle Beach; and a sister, Wendy Clark of Smithfield. Funeral services were to be pri vate. RAYMOND LeROY ERICKSEN Raymond LeRoy Ericksen of Pender Street, Ocean Isle Beach, died Sept. 19 at Grand Strand Reg ional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach. He was born in Detroit, Mich., on Feb. 3, 1932, a son of the late Hogbart and Asta E. Ericksen. He served in the U.S. Navy as a corps man. He moved to Ocean Isle Beach 8 years ago from White Plains, N.Y., where he was a lieutenant with the White Plains Fire Department. Mr. Ericksen was a member of the Ocean Isle Beach Volunteer Fire Department, the Calabash Elks Lodge and the Calabash VFW. He was a starter with The Pearl Golf Links. He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond L. Erick.sen. Surviving are his wife, Ellen Smith Ericksen; four sons, Michael Ericksen and Brian Ericksen, both of Ocean Isle Beach, Edward Erick.sen of Pcughkccpsie, N.Y., and Billy Ericksen of Sacramento, Calif.; sev en daughters, Karen Renwick of Dover, N.Y., Nancy Jazwinski of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., Peggy Bellamy of Croton Falls, N.Y., Gail McCarthy of Pawling, N.Y., Mark Ericksen of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Eileen Ericksen of Wilmington and lsciuic Erickscn of Occan I?lc Beach; and 14 grandchildren. ELIZABE TH MIDDLETON WILLIAMS Elizabeth Middleton Williams, widow of the Rev. Tom H. Williams, died Monday, Sept. 19, in Autumn Care of Shallotte. She was bom in Magnolia on Oct. 11, 1901, a daughter of the late Theodore and Sarah Crump Mid dleton. She graduated from WMU Training School and Chowan Col lege in 1925. She was a retired teacher. Surviving are a sister, Evelyn Hill of Winston-Salem, and a nephew. Dr. G.M. Hill of Portsmouth, Va. The funeral was to be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the Chapel of Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte, by the Rev. Bob Hall. Burial was to be in Galloway Cemetery, Supply.
