PFOPLE IN THE NEWS Two Reappointed To Coastal Panel Two members of the North Caro lina Coastal Resources Advisory Council (CRAC) from Brunswick County towns have been reappoint ed, while Brunswick County Com misioners must choose someone to fill the county seat left vacant fol lowing the death of Robert H. Maultsby Jr. of Bolivia. Rosetta Short of Long Beach has served on the CRAC since 1976, and is involved in the real estate in dustry. Joseph G. Johnson, an archi tect from the Ocean Isle Beach Sunset Beach area, will be serving his second term on the council. They are two of the eight "coastal cities" representatives on the 45-member group that advises the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission on issues coming before it. Maultsby. who died Sept. 16, had represented Brunswick County on the CRAC since 1989. Campaign Heads Thomas Lee of Shallotte and Janet Pope of Calabash have been chosen to head the Brunswick County campaign of Robert C. An derson, Republican candidate for the 7th Congressional District. They replace Robert Maultsby, who died on Sept. 16. Anderson, who seeks to replace incumbent Charlie Rose, said, "Rob ert Maultsby was a great American, an ardent supporter, a diligent work er but most importantly, a dear friend whom I will miss greatly." Armstrong recently reported for duty with 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune. Armstrong is the son of David W. Armstrong of Leonard Street, Southport. He is a 1993 graduate of Cary Senior High School. Roberson Recognized Marine Cpl. Douglas B. Roberson' recently received a Meritorious Mast. Roberson, son of Leo F. and Bon nie J. Roberson of Liberty Landing Road, Winnabow, was cited for out standing service while assigned with 2nd Assault Amphibious Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune. A Meritorious Mast is an official recognition from a Marine's com manding officer for superior individ ual performance. It is issued in the form of a bulletin published throughout the command, and a copy is entered in the Marine's per manent service records. In The Spotlight Lisa Tate of Wilmington and Patsy Hewett of Supply are in the "spotlight" at Supply Elementary School this month. A UNC-Wilmington graduate in her fourth year of teaching, Tate was recognized for her work as chairman of the Performance-Based Accoun tability Planning Committee. She is also grade chairman for the multi age group. Hewett was recognized for her "dedicated" volunteer work in De borah Simmons' third grade class. The Leland High School graduate has worked in the school system as a teacher's assistant and substitute teacher, and drives a bus. 'D.C. Experience ' Brunswick Community College President W. Michael Reaves partic ipated Sept. 24-29 in the American Association of Community Col leges' "D.C. Experience." The program is designed to help college leaders become better ac quainted with their legislative dele gation and federal agencies. While in the capital, was to visit North Carolina legislative delegation and the U.S. Economic Development Administration. Star-News Repeats Spelling Bee Win Access. nntaphore. Annullment. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Sixteen teams of spellers fouled out that way Sept. 22 to give the Wilmington Star-News duo its second con secutive win in the the Brunswick County Literacy Council's annual Spell for Literacy adult spelling bee. Managing editor John Meyer and reporter Richard Myers correctly spelled every word given them, winning when they corrected the misspelling of "kibitzer" by runners-up Mary Legg and Eric Pfeiffer. Legg and Pfeiffer, both Brunswick Community College students, were sponsored by the Altreuter family of Calabash. Legg, a returning competitor, and Pfeiffer, a newcomer, lasted eight rounds, correctly spelling such words as "maestro," "nadir" and "limn." Four teams made it to the seventh round, where the Dosher Memorial Hospital team of Tom Dale and Ma rina Terry misspelled "challah," and Security Savings Bank's Rebecca McKillop and Victor Pearsall mis spelled "plebiscite." Eighteen sponsors and 17 teams made $200 dona tions to the Brunswick County Literacy Council to sup port the fifth annual adult spelling bee, whose purpose is to heighten awareness of the county's literacy needs and to raise funds for literacy efforts.
