FRIDAY NIGHT PREVIEW West Brunswick Trojans Visit Pender Seeking Fourth Straight Win BY DOUG R UTTER West Brunswick looks for its fourth consecutive high school foot ball win Friday when the Trojans travel to Burgaw for a Waccamaw Conference game against the strug gling Pender Patriots. The Trojans, 1-0 in the confer ence and 4- 1 overall, are riding high after last week's 34-6 victory over a South Columbus team that many ex pected to contend for the conference championship. Pender suffered a 35-7 home loss to Whiteville last Friday to fall to 0 5 for the season. The Patriots have dropped 12 straight games dating back to last year. West Brunswick head coach Yogi Hickman said the biggest challenge this week is making sure the team doesn t look past Pender to the Trojans* Oct. 7 home game against Whiteville. "When you do that you don't im prove," Hickman said. 'It's always been a different kind of challenge when you play a team like Pender. We can tell our kids until we're blue in the face that you have to do this and that." "The challenge is tc make our kids understand they shouldn't wor ry about what Pender's record is. We need to worry about West Bruns wick High School and how we im prove as a football team," Hickman said. The Trojans have made improve ment in recent weeks, outscoring their last three onponents 94-26. We ve just made leaps and bounds in the last three weeks. We re playing much, much better now," Hickman said. "We have some individuals starting to feel comfortable in their roles and some young people starting to play well." Hickman said sophomores Cliff Gore and Brian "Bull" Nealy are starting to play well on the offensive line. Gore sprained a knee in last week's game and may sit out Friday. Pender, which has given up 162 points this season and scored just 40, will be without its head coach Friday night. Coach Gary Lewis was ejected . 'ast wec'c's game against Whiteville for arguing with officials, and he will not be permitted to coach in the West Brunswick game. In addition to Whiteville, Pender has lost to Wallace-Rose Hill (38 14), Laney (42-0), James Kenan (27-0) and Southwest Onslow (20 19) this season.
