Ray Washam Wins Sea Traii Men's Championship
Ray Washam posted a 72-hole to
tal of 314 to win the championship
division in the Sea Trail Men's Golf
Association Championships.
Eighty golfers entered the tourna
ment, which started with qualifying
rounds on Sept. 6 and concludcd
Sept. 16 with final rounds.

gross 315, Sid Roberson with 316,
Jim Trotter with 317, George Lefelar
and Jim Jones with 319, Jack Cain
with 320 and George Beerman with

One round of medal play and
three rounds of match play were
used in the four handicap flights and
Golden Flight.
In the A Flight, Stan Risch defeat
ed Jack Echard 2-and-l in the cham
pionship match. Ron Reopel placed
third and Steve Giordano was
fourth.
Doug Mehne bested Ed Hughes
4-and-3 to win the B Right champi
onship. Howard Van Dusen was
third and Gene Williams finished
fourth.
Herb Klapp defeated Jack Hal
loran 2-up to win the C Flight.
Byron Wauters and Frank Seaboldt
finished third and fourth respective
ly.
In the D Flight, Dale Stanton
edged Dick Billiar 1-up after 19
holes. Dutch Geescy placed third
and Dave Llewellyn was fourth.
Six golfers participated in the
Golden Right, and Ken Harris
emerged as the winner with a 4-and
3 victory over John Penfield in the
final Guv VI < in I ton and Jim
Blanda rounded out the top four.
All of the winners were recog
nized at a luncheon following the fi
nal round Sept. 16. Mike Kallam,
head professional and director of
golf, presented the trophies.

The Brick Landing Plantation
men's and women's golf associa
tions held their first member-guest
tournament Sept. 17 and 18.
The format for the 36-hole event
was best ball of twosome, using the
net score for the ladies and gross
and net for the men. All teams were
flighted after the first round.
In the women's first flight, Peggy
Campana and Dawn Laylock earned
top honors after winning a four-hole
playoff.
Sue Nelson and Jane Shanley
placed second with a two-day total
of 126, followed by Debbie Mason
and Margie Fiocchi with 1 28.
Rosemary Warr and Brigette
Oleader won the second flight with a
score of 131. Runners-up included
Bonnie Giehl and Sue Brown with
134 and Millie Thomas and Frankie
Butler with 135.
In the men's tournament, Marc
Hewett and Reno Coleman posted
the low gross of 145. Gene Bonstein
and Mike Sullivan finished two
strokes back in second place, and A1
Zyga and Rick Gilbert were third
with 148.
In the first flight, Ed Lakey and
Terry Boynton fired the low net of
119. Dennis Tiede and Steve Salmon
were second with 121, and Dennis
Vanek and A1 Ladasky placed third
with 114.
Dick Gorney and George Curtin
shot net 121 to win the second
flight. Finishing second with 125
were Norb Beck and Jim Dennis. Ed
Dobson and Warren McDonald took
third with 126.
Third flight winners were Ted
Tacea and David Bornstein with net
125. Vic Knott and Tom Noone fin
ished three shots back, and Bill
Lundy and Jack Davis placed third
wiih 129.

won the fourth flight with a 36-hole
Mai of 130. Ernie Behrle and Jim
Downs took second with 133, fol
lowed by Charles Warr and Ken
Oleader with 134.
Closest-to the-pin winners were
Ed Dobson and Peggy Campana at
the second hole, Frankie Butler at
the eighth. Marc Hewett and Ed
Lakey at the 12th and A1 Ladasky
and Pam Shanley at the 17th.

the individual competition, followed
by Barb Kosanke and Claire
Cheney.
In the two-person team event,
Kosanke and Pretzel were the win
ner. Joan Behrle, Cheney, June Beck
and Bonnie Dennis won the four

Brierv/ood Ladies
Doris Dunfee shot gross 85 to
lead the top flight in the Brierwood
Ladies Golf Association tournament
last Tuesday.
Marje Roach, Bobbie Maples and
Ann Richardson tied for low net in
Flight A with rounds of 69. Ann
Causer had low putts with 27.
In Flight B, Janet Twomey had
the low gross of 92 and Mary
Schaack and Ginny Campbell tied
for low net with scores of 70.
Catherine Clemmons had low putts
with 29.
Shirley Groff had gross 100 and
Pierrette Tompkins shot net 71 to
lead the way in Flight C. Maureen
Farley placed second with net 76,
and June Cleasby had low putts with
31.
Flight D winners were Elizabeth
Carter with gross 107 and Joanne
LaWall with net 74. Margaret Pingo
and Toni Kobos tied for second low
net with rounds of 77. Carter and
LaWall tied for low putts with 29
each.
Chipping in for birdie were
Schaack at the ninth hole. Causer at
the 10th and Twomey at the 14th.
Also carding birdies were Sara
McCullough at the fourth hole and
Dunfee at the seventh. Reporting
chip-ins were Cleasby at the sev
enth, Kobos at the ninth and Sue
McCann and Groff at the 13th.
Calabash Veterans
Bill McDavit chot gross 84 and
Joe Brust had net 70 to lead the top
flight in the Calabash Veterans Golf
Association tournament last Friday
at Oak Island.
Runners-up in the A Flight were
Jack Brady with gross 87 and Lee
Rotherforth with net 72.
In the B Right, Ernie Williams
posted the low gross or 88 and Fred
Hall was second with 92. Ix>w net
winners were Rich Cummings and
George O'Connell with rounds of
73.
Top finishers in the C Flight were
Alan KJetchka with gross 89 and
Lew Meyers with net 68. Finishing
second were Harry Birnie with gross

On Sept. 16, the team of Joe

scores per hole. Finishing second
with 189 was the foursome of Jerry

Sea Trail Couples
Pat and Bill Burkart were the
overall winners of the fifth annual
Sea Trail Couples Championship
held Saturday and Sunday on the
Jones and Byrd courses.
I"he two-day tournament was
comprised of four, nine-hole compe
titions using the best ball, one-half
aggregate, captain's choice and al
ternate shot formats.
The Burkarts finished with a
score of 123.75, and second place
went to the team of Nancy and Doug
Mehne with 124.
Ellie and Chuck Helmboldt
placed third with 126, followed by
Jane and Boh Treitlcr with 127.5.
Don and Peggy Cooper won the
best ball competition with a score of
31.5. They edged Dick and Joan
Worley on a match of cards.
Using the one-half aggregate for
mat. John and Mary Penfield led the
way with a score of 34.5. Dave and
Joan Llewellyn were second with
35.5.
Herb and Ann Holman finished
first in the captain's choice with
25.75. Second place went to Bob
and Lori Pearce with 26.25.
Winning the alternate shot event
were John and Jennie Gregory with
28.75. Placing second with 29.25
was the team of Bob and Phyllis
Manfred.
Carolina Shores Men
Gary Mott defeated Mike Murphy
in the final match of the Carolina
Shores Men's Club Championship,
which was completed earlier this
month after several weeks of play.
In Flight A, Ken Earl and Bern
Distler were tied after 18 holes. Earl
prevailed on the second playoff
hole.
Bob Roland topped Rod Manifold
in Flight B, Don Errickson defeated
George Warren in Right C and
Chuck Radcliffe bested Nat Pcavy
in Flight D.

Seniors Championship for golfers
age 70 and over. Don June was sec

with 154 points.

Thursday at Bay Tree, Dan Roberts
shot net 74 to lead Flight A. Bill

Benton Austin placed third with 78.
In the B Right, Don Rose led the
way with net 67. Runners-up were
Nat Peavy with 73 and Jack
McAleer with 73.

Championships

were the women's and men's low
gross winners in last week's Brick
Landing Plantation two-day club
championships.
Men's runners-up included Dick
Babcock and Joe Blatcher, who tied
for second, and fourth-place finisher
Al Zyga.
Larry Agrimonti was the men's
low net winner. Norb Beck finished
second, Dennis Tiede third and Ed
Lakey fourth.
In ihe women's competition,
Alice Grossman had the second low
gross and Jean Lakey placed third.
For the fourth year. Rose Gorney
was the low net winner. She was fol
lowed by Vivian Rowe and Martha
Cullen.
Nifty Miners
Mary Helen Leisey had the low
gross of 62 and low net of 38 in the
Carolina Shores Nifty Niners tour
nament last Thursday at Brierwood
and Ocean Isle Beach golf courses.

The tournament is scheduled Friday, Nuv. 4, ai Brierwood Golf Club

The entry fee of $70 per team pays for green and cart fees, awards,
