Elwyn Joseph "Jody" King died
Oct. 8 in Pensacola, Fla. The funeral
was held Oct. 11 in Pensacola, and a
gathering of friends took place Oct.
13 at the home of Elwyn King, his
father, in Leland.
In addition to his father, Mr. King
is survived by his mother, Mary Jo
Shamblee of Pensacola.

10 at New Hanover Regional Med
ical Center.
The funeral was held Oct. 14 at
Lynch and Sons Funeral Directors

Burial was in White Chapel

ROBERT H. WALKER
Robert H. Walker, 72, of East Port
Golf Community, Little River, S C.,
died Oct. 13 in Grand Strand Reg
ional Medical Center after an illness.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was
a son of the late Walter and Elsa
Wagenknect Walker. He retired from
Honeywell Corp. in 1980 and was
owner and broker of Coastal Real
tors in Myrtle Beach. He was a
member of Bay Tree Golf Club and
was an Army veteran of World War
II.
Survivors include his wife. Col
leen Fuery Walker; two sons, Wayne
W. Walker of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and
Robert Walker of Las Vegas, Nev.; a
daughter, Cheryl Johnson of Brecks
ville, Ohio; four stepsons, Timothy
O. Hocking of Atlanta, Christopher
J. Hocking of Morgantown, W.Va.,
James A. Hocking of Broadview
Heights, Ohio, and Matthew M.
(Skip) Hocking of Little River; three
stepdaughters, Catherine Gangloff
of Orlando. Fla, Marie Chambers of
Richfield, Ohio, and Elizabeth Dil
acquia of Mayficld Village, Ohio;
and 17 grandchildren.

LAND
Mary Esther Southerland of Wil
mington died Oct. 10 at her home.
She was born in Inverness, Fla.,
on Feb. 7, 1941, the daughter of the
Rev. Donald B. Smith of Winter
Haven, Fla., and the late Grace Pearl
Sauder Smith, and was preceded in
death by her brother, Samuel L.
Smith.
She was member and organist of
First Assembly of God for many
years. She was employed by UNC
Wilmington as a secretary in the
International Studies program and
was a lecturer for Weight Watchers.
Surviving in addition to her father
are her husband, Thomas (Tommy)
Southerland of the home; her chil
dren, Cindy Williams and husband
John of Virginia Beach, Va., and
Pennie Southerland of Charlotte; her
brothers and sisters, Miriam Hard
ister of Titusville, Fla., Donald L.
Smith of Wilmington, David B.
Smith of Winnabow, Joe Smith of
Winter Haven, Fla., Loran Smith of
Ahoskie, Madonna Capra of Incline
Village, Nev., and Althea Reeves of
Pensacola, Fla.; two grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Oct.
14 in the First Assembly of God
Church by the Rev. Julian McMillan
and Ray Tester. Burial was in
Greenlawn Memorial Park, Wilm
ington.
PHYLLIS CROTTS STARR
Phyllis Crotts StarT, 62, of Trott
Street, Yaupon Beach, died Oct. 13
at Dosher Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Oct.
15 at Oak Island Presbyterian
Church, where she was a member,
with the Rev. Michael Ward and
Martha Moe officiating. Gravpside
services were held Sept. 16 at
Dentown Town Cemetery in Denton
with Mrs. Moe officiating.
Mrs. Stan was born July 22,
1932, in Albemarle, daughter of
Florence Greene Crotts and the late
George Lee Crotts, and moved here
23 years ago from Denton. She was
retired from the Brunswick County
Schools System.
Survivors include her husband of
44 years, Ted C. Starr of the home; a
daughter, Myra Burn of Fayettcville,
Ga.; her mother, Florence Greene
Crotts of the home; and three grand
daughters.
Memorials contributions may be
made to Oak Island Presbyterian
Church Building Fund.
JOSEPH FRANKLIN WATKINS SR.
Joseph Franklin Watkins Sr., 77,
of Carolina Shores, died Oct. 13. He
was born in Cumberland, Md., on
April 2, 1917, a son of the late
Joseph and Nannie Lee Miller
Watkins.
He was chief engineer for the
Tapanzee Bridge in Tarrytown, N.Y.,
and was project manager for the first
offshore oil terminal constructed in
the Persian Gulf. He was also pro
ject manager for ports in Liberia, El
Salvador, the Philippines and Vict
nam. He was a member of the
MOLES, a heavy construction asso
ciation, and a member of St. Stevens
Episcopal Church.
Surviving are his wife, Leora
Eggleston Watkins; two sons,
Joseph F. Watkins Jr. of Bedminster,
N.J., and Jeffery A. Watkins of
Arnold, Md.; and five grandchil
dren.
Memorial services were held Oct.
!7 in St. Stevens Episcopal Church,
North Myrtle Beach, S.C., by the
Rev. Preston Huntley.
REV. JOE CARLTON SMITH
The Rev. Joe Carlton Smith, 65,
of Supply, died Oct. 15 after an ex
tended illness.
He was bom in Stanly County on
Oct. 9, 1929, the son of the late W.T.
and Addie Earnhardt Smith of
Albemarle. He was a retired Metho
dist minister, serving churches in
Guilford, Rowan, Yadkin, Stokes
and Forsyth countics. He retired in
June after 43 years as a member of
the Western North Carolina Con
ference of the United Methodist
Church.
Rev. Smith was a graduate of
Pfciffer College, High Point College
and the Wesley Theological Sem
inary.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle
Brewer Smith; three daughters, Judy
L. Smith of Durham, Debbie S.
Newman of Supply and Martha S.
Brooks of Morehead City; three
brothers, Max Smith of Albemarle,
Bill and Hugh Smith of Richmond,
Va.; two sisters, Helen S. Turner of
Columbia, S.C., and Pearle S. Ger
melman of Albuquerque, N.M.; and
two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Oct.
18 in the Stony Hill United Meth
odist Church near Albemarle, with
burial in the church cemetery.

PATRICIA A. MANGAN
Patricia A. Mangan, born Feb. 2,
1958, died Oct. 11 in an automobile
accident in Calabash.
Memorial services were held at
Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic
Church, North Myrtle Beach, S.C.,
on Oct. 14 and at St. Francis by the
Sea in Mrs. Mangan's hometown of
Hilton Head Island, S.C., on Oct. 17.

Mrs. Mangan is survived by her

Cold Spring, N.Y.
BOBBY LAWRENCE GRAY
Bobby Lawrence Gray of Shal
lotte died Oct. 17. He was bom in
Brunswick County on Jan. 23, 1937,
the son of the late Edgar Lawrence
and Mortie Blanton Gray. He was
retired from the U.S. Army.
Surviving are his wife, Louise
Milligan Gray of the home; two
daughters, Pamela G. Hampton of
Greensboro and Virginia Gray of the
home; three brothers, William "Bill"
Gray of Houston, Texas, Benny
Gray and Lennon Gray, both of
Shallotte; a sister, Betty Bozeman of
Shallotte; and a granddaughter, Lora
Hampton.
There will be no memorial service
or visitation at the request of Mr.
Gray.
FLOYD WILSON WESCOTT
Floyd Wilson Wescott, 78, of
Stone Chimney Road, Supply, died
Oct. 16 at The Brunswick Hospital.
He was bom in Southport on July
29, 1916, and was the son of the late
Roland and Nellie Lewis Wescott.
He was a member of Letties Grove
Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church
and was a U.S. Army veteran serv
ing during World War II under
General Patton.
He is suiVived by a son, Floyd E.
"Buddy" Wescott of Supply; a
daughter, Linda W. Bullard of Win
nabow; a brother, W.H. "Lee" Wes
cott of Winnabow; five grandchil
dren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were to be held
Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at
Letties Grove Pentecostal Freewill
Baptist Church with the Rev. Maur
ice Milligan officiating. Burial was
to follow in the Bethel Church Cem
etery, Southport.

Lemuel "Buddy" McCumbce, 60,
of Big Neck Road, Ash, died Oct.
1 4 at his home. The funeral was held
Oct. 17 at Letties Grove Pentecostal
FWB Church, with burial in Chapel
Hill Cemetery.
Born in Brunswick County on
Aug. 6, 1934, he was the only son of
the late Tommy and Etha Stone
McCumbee. He was active in the
Democratic Party and was employed
by Brunswick County as supervisor
of the county automotive garage.
Surviving arc his wife, Jewell
Brooks McCumbee; three sons, Tim
McCumbee and Mike McCumbee,
both of Supply, and Eric McCumbee
of Ash; four daughters, Mrs. Kevin
(Carole) Piver of Ash, Mrs. Ricky
(Linda) Parker, Mrs. Kerry (Kay)
Smith and Mrs. Jarctt (Lori) Elliott,
all of Supply; four sisters, Ida Bren
nan, Euzina Coleman. Margaret
Guyton and Betty Ferguson, all of
Shallotte; and 13 grandchildren.
CARL JOHN YOPP
Carl John "Jack" Yopp, 63, of
Norton Street, Yaupon Beach, died
Oct. 14 at his home. The funeral was
held Oct. 16 at Ocean View United
Methodist Church with burial in
Cape Fear Memorial Park.
Mr. Yopp was bom March 10,
1931, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., son of
the late Charles and Elizabeth Bar
nard Yopp, and moved here in 1993
from Wanamassa, N.J. He was a
U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean
War, retired from the Township of
Ocean, N.J., and was a member of
Fox Squinel Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Jean
Giles Yopp of the home; a son,
Robert Yopp of Masapeaqua, Long
Island, N.Y.; two daughters, Barbara
Sharp of Long Beach and Linda
Sharp of Long Branch, N.J.; two
brothers, Charles and Don Yopp,
both of Wanamassa, NJ.; and three
grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by a brother, Peter Yopp.

Road, Little River, S.C., died Oct.
18 at Grand Strand Regional
Medical Center in Myrtle Beach.
He was born in Glascow, Soot
land, the son of the late Archiebald
and Margaret Beveridge Wilson. He
was retired from the New York
Telephone Co., a member of St.
Stephen's Episcopal Church and the
Grand Strand Telephone Pioneers.
He was a volunteer with Mobile
Meal, and a teachers' aide at the
North Myrtle Beach Primary
School. He was a veteran of World
War II.

brother, William Wilson of Cala
