Daniel Russ Subbing
For Injured Teammate
Former West Brunswick High School football standout Daniel Russ
has seen substantial playing time
in each of the last two East Car
olina University football games.
Russ opened (he season as a
backup to senior defensive end
Willie Brookins. but Russ moved
into the starting role after
Brookins injured his left knee two
weeks ago against South Carolina.
Russ, a sophomore, has
played 158 downs in five games
this season, an average of 32 snaps
per game. He's made six tackles, assisted on eight others and is credited
with two quarterback sacks and six OB pressures.
Brookins could return to the lineup in two or three weeks. In the
meantime, Russ will continue to see a lot of action in the trenches.
The Pirates (3-3) will travel to Tulsa this Saturday and host
Cincinnati on Oct. 29. East Carolina has a big game coming up Nov. 5 at
Auburn.
Russ started at linebacker and tight end for West Brunswick in 1991,
when the Trojans finished 13-2 and were the state 2A runners-up. He
was the team's MVP his junior and senior years.
Former Cougar Shines
Todd Vice, a former South Brunswick High School grid star, made
the most of his first start at quarterback for Gardner- Webb last Saturday.
Vice completed 19 of 23 pass attempts for 302 yards and three
touchdowns as Gardner- Webb crushed Catawba 63-19. Vice also ran for
a touchdown and was named South Atlantic Conference player of the
week.
Vice, a 1991 graduate of South Brunswick, was the Brunswick
County high school football co-player of the year in 1990 when he led
the Cougars to the state playoffs.
Harris Field House
Major construction started last week on the Edgar B. Harris Field
House at West Brunswick High. It should be completed in time for the
1995 football season.
The 4,800-square-foot facility will include a ticket booth, conces
sion stand, public restrooms and locker rooms for the home and visiting
teams.
The West Brunswick Athletic Booster Club has raised approximate
ly $50,952 toward the total estimated cost of $100,000.
Edgar B. Harris of Shallotte, a long-time supporter of West Bruns
wick athletics, donated $25,000 for the project.
The booster club raised $7,917 with a raffle and another $4,435 with
a golf tournament. Boosters also have received pledges for donations of
cash, labor or materials from local businesses in the amount of $13,100.
At halftime of the West Brunswick- Whiteville game two weeks ago,
the South Brunswick Islands Women's Club presented a donation of
$500.

"We had a young team with one
senior," Council said. "I feel that we
will improve if the girls stick with it.
If we work in the off-season and
work on our weaknesses we could
be a pretty strong team."

BY DOUG RUTTER
Another week, another couple
thousand spots.
That's been the story for local pier
fishermen lately and it was business
as usual last week as the best fall
spot season in recent memory con
tinued without a hitch.
"It's been a good week, and
they're still hitting solid this morn
ing," Ed Kayler of Sunset Beach
Fishing Pier reported Monday.

A.J. Hammill of Sunset Pier. "I've
never seen anything like it in my en
tire life."
Spot fishing remained strong last
week at Ocean Isle Beach and
Holden Beach piers as well.
"It's been good. They've been bit
ing all weekend the spots have,"
said Billy Settlcmyer of Ocean Isle
Beach Fishing Pier. "The spots have
been real good. They've bit for two
days straight."
Gil Bass of Holden Beach Fishing
Pier said this season is starting to
measure up to the excellent spot sea
son of about 10 years ago.
"This probably, if it keeps on, is
going to match that. This is begin
ning to match that I believe." Bass
said.
"They're just catching them up a
storm, two or three at a time, walk
ing off with buckets of fish," he
added.
Pier anglers also caught whiting,
flounder, pompano and blues last
week. Ted Paliwoda of Calabash
landed a 9X-pound flounder Sunday
at Sunset Pier.

on the hook and line and with the
gill net," said Joyce l^and of Tripp's

Land said. "We've had a real good
year on them so far, and they're still
catching them out there now."
Land also reported inshore catch
es of speckled trout and spottailcd
drum. Offshore, anglers have been
pulling in blucfish.
"I didn't have anybody go out for
kings or Spanish mackerel this
week," I-and said.
Ilolden Beach Marina
?
Gary Can of Holden Beach
Marina said fall spots are the biggest
thing happening these days. Poor
weather prevented most people from
fishing offshore last week.
"That's about the only action
around is spots. Everything else,
charter boats and otherwise, have
been weathered out." Can said.
Ron Ixak won the manna's week
ly trophy for a 2.3-pound Spanish
mackerel two weeks ago 1 ^ast week,
nobody won the trophy for a king
mackcrel because none were caught.
"We haven't have anything excit
ing happen," Carr said. "We haven't
had a boat sink or anything."
Ocean Isle Marina
Fishermen out of Ocean Isle
Marina have been catching a lot of
spots, but everything else was pretty
slow last week.
