SPORTING SCENE Daniel Russ Subbing For Injured Teammate Former West Brunswick High School football standout Daniel Russ has seen substantial playing time in each of the last two East Car olina University football games. Russ opened (he season as a backup to senior defensive end Willie Brookins. but Russ moved into the starting role after Brookins injured his left knee two weeks ago against South Carolina. Russ, a sophomore, has played 158 downs in five games this season, an average of 32 snaps per game. He's made six tackles, assisted on eight others and is credited with two quarterback sacks and six OB pressures. Brookins could return to the lineup in two or three weeks. In the meantime, Russ will continue to see a lot of action in the trenches. The Pirates (3-3) will travel to Tulsa this Saturday and host Cincinnati on Oct. 29. East Carolina has a big game coming up Nov. 5 at Auburn. Russ started at linebacker and tight end for West Brunswick in 1991, when the Trojans finished 13-2 and were the state 2A runners-up. He was the team's MVP his junior and senior years. Former Cougar Shines Todd Vice, a former South Brunswick High School grid star, made the most of his first start at quarterback for Gardner- Webb last Saturday. Vice completed 19 of 23 pass attempts for 302 yards and three touchdowns as Gardner- Webb crushed Catawba 63-19. Vice also ran for a touchdown and was named South Atlantic Conference player of the week. Vice, a 1991 graduate of South Brunswick, was the Brunswick County high school football co-player of the year in 1990 when he led the Cougars to the state playoffs. Harris Field House Major construction started last week on the Edgar B. Harris Field House at West Brunswick High. It should be completed in time for the 1995 football season. The West Brunswick Athletic Booster Club has raised approximate ly $50,952 toward the total estimated cost of $100,000. Edgar B. Harris of Shallotte, a long-time supporter of West Bruns wick athletics, donated $25,000 for the project. The booster club raised $7,917 with a raffle and another $4,435 with a golf tournament. Boosters also have received pledges for donations of cash, labor or materials from local businesses in the amount of $13,100. At halftime of the West Brunswick- Whiteville game two weeks ago, the South Brunswick Islands Women's Club presented a donation of $500. "The bottom part of the season we went downhill as far as our serving. We got worse instead of better." West Brunswick's only senior this season was Gause. Four current ju niors, four sophomores and five freshmen could return to the team next fall. "We had a young team with one senior," Council said.
