(LEW) LLEWHXYH TURN BALLOT OVER AND VOTE BOTH SIDES Thorsen, Hewett Seek Dist. 1 Seat T\vo Brunswick County neighbors and natives are vying for the District 1 seat on the Brunswick County Board of Education. Democrat Olaf "Bud" Thorsen and Republican Rozell Hewett both live in the Shallotte Point area. Thorsen defeated District 1 in cumbent Thurman Gause in the May primary for his party's nomination, while Hewett was unopposed for the Republican nomination. School board candidates run from the dis trict in which they reside, but are elected by voters countywide. The winner on Nov. 8 will serve a two year term. Here are their responses to three questions asked by The Brunswick Beacon. I. What specific steps do you think the school system should take to generate more interest in education among Brunswick County parents? "I don't know," is Hewett's can did reply. "But maybe we could en force laws on the books, such as making parents responsible for their children's education up to a certain ?? age. Thorsen offers four ideas: encour age more parent-teacher confer ences, schedule classroom visitation days and semiannual school open houses, and possibly establish a homework hotline so that parents can call and check on their chil dren's assignments. 2. Both the general public and county officials say they have trouble understanding the school system budget ($52 million this year) and in determining how re sponsibly the school system uses the money it receives from the fed eral, state and county govern ments. What do you think the Brunswick County Board of Education should do to make the budget easier to understand and to be more accountable for the money it spends? Hewett advocates the board de veloping a line item budget and making it public. Thorsen believes the school sys tem should take the budget to the public through a series of forums and "explain it so the public can bet ter understand where the money is spent" and also explain how much money is received from each source.
