Births Are Announced Kirby Ray and Brenda Kirby of Supply have announced the birth of a daughter, Ravenne Nicole, at 6:38 p.m. Aug. 25 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces anH wac 70 inches long. She joins a brother, Joshua. She also has two older siblings, Cheryl McCumbee of Supply and Tommy Kirby of Greensboro. McCumbee Mike and Cheryl McCumbee of Supply have announced the birth of a daughter, Brianna Paige, at 11:40 a.m. Oct. 10 at New Hanover Reg ional Medical Center. She weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 20 inches long. She joins a sister, Brooke, and a brother, Adam. Brunswick Literacy Groups Forming The Brunswick County Literacy Council is forming groups in Bolivia, Ash and Longwood to pro mote literacy. Anyone is welcome to attend the upcoming meetings at which con cerned citizens can learn about the problem of illiteracy and share ideas about helping non-readers in their area. The Bolivia Literacy Satellite will meet Monday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Bolivia Volunteer Fire Depart ment on Green Lewis Road. She had just returned from Duke University Medical Center, where she successfully underwent cancer surgery. Miss Mintz was born Oct. 28, 1889, near Grissettown, and credits her long life to a variety of reasons, including "loving everybody. " Grand Strand To Sponsor Seminar On Alzheimer's Grand Strand Regional Medical Center will sponsor a seminar on Alzheimer's disease on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the Grand Strand Senior Center, 21st Avenue North in Myrtle Beach. Guest speaker will be John E. Rathbun, M.D., a local internist and member of the hospital's medical staff since 1991. He will discuss the causes, early signs and treatments of Alzheimer's. The seminar is free and open to the public. "Anyone interested in learning more about Alzheimer's is invited and encouraged to attend," said Joan E. Carroza, the hospital's marketing director. Southport-Oak Island Area Announces Holiday Happenings The Southport-Oak Island area will celebrate Christmas by the Sea with various holiday events, begin ning with a hometown parade. Music, homemade floats, beauty queens, horses, fire trucks and a group of animated character will highlight "A Christmas Fantasy" pa rade, which steps off at 3 p.m. Dec. 3 traveling Yaupon Drive in Yaupon Beach to Middleton Park on Oak Island Drive in Long Beach, lead ing the parade will be Bob Town send, WECT-TV newsman, as grand marshal. A silent auction will take place Dec. 3 from 10-11:45 a.m. at the Long Beach Fire Station. Local mer chants have donated items to be bid upon Proceeds from the auction benefit the festival. On Sunday. Dec. 4, the Oak Is land Beautification Club will con duct a tour of Oak Island Homes, beginning with refreshments and en tertainment at the Long Beach Recreation Center. The tour will take place from 1-5 p.m. On Dec. 10 downtown Southporl will be the homes lour site. Lum inaries and white lights will turn Southport's historic district and wa terfront into a winter wonderland. The tour begins at the Franklin Square An Gallery and will run from 5-9 p.m. Proceeds benefit South port 2000 Inc., a downtown rc vitalization group. On Dcc. 11, the Sea Notes will perform in concert at 3 p.m. at the Southport Community Building, singing traditional Christmas songs. Donations will be accepted. The Best Decorated Home Con test and Business Viewing will be Friday, Dec. 16, through Sunday, Dec. 18. from 7-9:30 p.m. nightly.
