Children enjoyed hay rides and horse rides as well as games such as a roll-the-pumpking relay race. The morn ing ended with a hot dog cookout. Fourth Graders Participate In Colonial American Life Brunswick County fourth grade students caught a glimpse of 18th century lifestyles last week during the annual Heritage Days program at Brunswick Town State Historic Site. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, local volunteers and site staff dressed in 18th century attire to demonstrate some of the crafts and chores common in colo nial America. These include food preparation and cooking, stenciling, toys and games, broom making, basketry, candle dipping and woodworking, said Brenda Marshburn. assistant site manager Students also learned about period clothing and lifestyles. Students had the opportunity to try their hand at making some of the crafts and demonstrators also an swered their questions. Participating schools were Union, Supply. Bolivia. Waccamaw and Southport elementary schools and Leland Middle School. Heritage Days Is sponsored by the Brunswick County Schools, Bruns wick Town S'a'e Hisinrir Site Staff, Friends of Brunswick Town and lo cal volunteers. An agency of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, the historic site is open to the public at no charge. In its heydey Bruns wick Town was a prosperous port and center of colonial government. The site is off N.C. 133 between Southport and Wilmington. Literacy Council Certifies Six Tutors At Workshop The Brunswick County Literacy Council certified six new volunteer tutors at its recent workshop. They are Sally Banker of Sunset Harbor, Dona Dak of Boiling Spring Lakes, Betty Herman of Ocean Isle Beach, ( had Shreve of Shallotte, Vicki Slider of Holdcn Beach and Marie West of Winna bow. Joan Altman conducted the ten m hour phonics-based workshop Oct. 21-22 at the literacy council office in Supply. The tutors will work with adults and teenagers who want to improve their reading and writing skills.
