State Board To Award Ph
Contract For Oak Island
ann/ng
Bridge
The state Board of Transportation Friday is
expected to award a contract to a Raleigh firm to
prepare pluming and environmental studies for
construction of a second bridge to Oak Island.
The contract proposes a maximum fee of
$171,847 be paid to DSAtlantic.
Plans for the project call for building a two
lane facility from South Middleton Avenue to
N.C. 211. Middleton Road will be widened from
Beach Drive to S.R. 1190 and the bridge over
Davis Creek replaced.
Work on the project had been delayed be
cause of discussions among property owners and
the state over donation of partial right of way.
This contract will move the planning phase
nearly one year ahead of the schedule included'
in the sstatc Transportation Improvement
Program adopted this summer.
Total project cost is expected to run about
$6.75 million, of which $4.95 million would be
for actual construction.
In related action, the board is expected to ap
prove construction on Beach Drive from Oak
Island Drive to Middleton Avenue in Long
Beach, at a cost of $200,100.
Also on the agenda for funding approval are
these county projects:
? drainage improvement at the west end of
Main Street, Sunset Beach, $30,000;
? drainage outfalls to improve roadway
drainage on Caswell Beach Road, Caswell
Beach, $15,uuu;
? preliminary engineering for relocation of
the intersection of Old Fayetteville Road and
Village Road, Leland, $75,000;
? widening N.C. 211 to three lanes a dis
tance of four-tenths of a mile northward of the
existing curb and gutter section in Southport,
$100,000; and
? replacement of Bridge No. 97 over Juniper
Creek on S.R. 1340, $142,000 for right-of-way
acquisition.
