State Board To Award Ph Contract For Oak Island ann/ng Bridge The state Board of Transportation Friday is expected to award a contract to a Raleigh firm to prepare pluming and environmental studies for construction of a second bridge to Oak Island. The contract proposes a maximum fee of $171,847 be paid to DSAtlantic. Plans for the project call for building a two lane facility from South Middleton Avenue to N.C. 211. Middleton Road will be widened from Beach Drive to S.R. 1190 and the bridge over Davis Creek replaced. Work on the project had been delayed be cause of discussions among property owners and the state over donation of partial right of way. This contract will move the planning phase nearly one year ahead of the schedule included' in the sstatc Transportation Improvement Program adopted this summer. Total project cost is expected to run about $6.75 million, of which $4.95 million would be for actual construction. In related action, the board is expected to ap prove construction on Beach Drive from Oak Island Drive to Middleton Avenue in Long Beach, at a cost of $200,100. Also on the agenda for funding approval are these county projects: ? drainage improvement at the west end of Main Street, Sunset Beach, $30,000; ? drainage outfalls to improve roadway drainage on Caswell Beach Road, Caswell Beach, $15,uuu; ? preliminary engineering for relocation of the intersection of Old Fayetteville Road and Village Road, Leland, $75,000; ? widening N.C. 211 to three lanes a dis tance of four-tenths of a mile northward of the existing curb and gutter section in Southport, $100,000; and ? replacement of Bridge No. 97 over Juniper Creek on S.R. 1340, $142,000 for right-of-way acquisition. Brunswick Sees Big Jump In Stick-Built Housing Brunswick County has seen a marked increase in the number of "stick-built" houses during the first nine months of 1994 as compared with the same period last year, ac cording to building permit Figures released by the county planing de partment this week. Permits for site-built houses to taled 154 during the period of January through September, as com pared with 106 during the same months of 1993, an increase of 45 percent. A total $16.5 million worth of construction has been permitted this year in the unincorporated areas of Brunswick County, Varnamtown, Bolivia, Leland, Belvillc, Navassa and Sandy Creek. Tiicic were 13 new homes and 57 mobile homes permitted during September. Three permits were is sued for multi-family dwellings worth Si 97,200. There were two commercial permits issued for con struction totalling $98,400. For addi - tions valued at $165,576 were per mitted along with three garages worth $54,480 and four decks or porches valued at $12,640. In all, there were 426 permits is sued for more than $1.5 million worth of construction during Sept ember. Of those permits, 127 were for building, 145 for electrical, 116 plumbing and 38 mechanical.
