During November, National Dia betes Month, The Brunswick Hos pital is providing early identification of individuals at high risk of devel oping the disease, using a question naire and two screening clinics. According to the American Dia betes Association, nearly 14 million Americans have diabetes, a serious life-threatening disease for which there is no cure. Diabetes claims more than 150,000 lives annually. People with diabetes have a high er risk of heart attacks, strokes, kid ney failure and blindness. The more carefully people with diabetes man age the disease, the more likely they are to reduce their risk of other seri ous health problems, said Daphne Yarbrough, marketing director of The Brunswick Hospital. Anyone who is over 30, over weight, or has a family history of di abetes is at risk. Black Americans and Hispanics arc 55 percent more likely to have diabetes than Cau casians; American Indians are 300 percent more likely. Symptoms of diabetes develop slowly and include excessive thirst, frequent urination, extreme fatigue, unexplained weight loss and ongo ing incidents of blurred vision. Yarb rough encourages people in terested in determining their own risk level for developing diabetes to fill out the questionnaire that ap pears elsewhere in this issue of The Brunswick Beacon. Anyone scoring over five points on the questionnaire may bring the completed form to one of the clinics offered by The Brunswick Hospital Friday. Nov. 11, or Monday, Nov. 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the hospital. All screenings are free, with in formation provided on followup and/or treatment for those at high risk.
