New Optimist Officers PHOTO CONTRIBUTED Chosen new South Brunswick Islands Optimist Club officers for the year beginning Oct. 1 are (from left) Tammy Gore, secretary-treasurer; Kitty Shore, vice president; Sara Estep, president; and Jana Martin, vice-president. The club, chartered in September 1992, has conducted oratorical contests and bicycle safety and " Respect for Law" programs as well as distributing water safety tip sheets through out the community. The club's latest project is an essay contest for students in grades 10-12 on the theme, "Freedom ? Our Most Precious Heritage." The Optimists meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. CLUB BRIEFS New Shrine Club To Be Chartered In ceremonies scheduled for Friday at Lion's Paw Golf Club, Bobby C. Dixon, Potentate of Sudan Temple, will present a charter to the newly formed South Brunswick Islands Shrine Club, to become the Sudan Temple's 42nd Shrine Club. Steve Norris, the club's first presi dent, will accept the charter autho rizing the new group to begin its co operative effort supporting Shriners Hospitals for Crippled and Bumed Children. Shriners across North America, Panama and the Phillippines support 22 hospitals for children who need free expert medical care. Of these, 19 are orthopedic units and three are burn centers. The closest is in Greenville, S.C. This year's hospital budget is $394 million. The entire cost of care for more than 450,000 children has been paid by the Shrine of North America. Dixon said anyone who knows of a child in need of Shriners' free medical care should call any local Shriner or the Sudan Temple at (919)637-5197. Oldham To Speak Anita Oldham, executive director of the Brunswick County Volunteer and Information Center, will be guest speaker at the Holden Beach Senior Citizens' meeting on Nov. 14 l ne group meets at 6 p.m. in the Lockwood Folly Community Building. A country dinner will be served. All persons over 50 are welcome to join the group. Club To Visit Museum The Brierwood Ladies Club will tour the Museum of Coastal Carolina at Ocean Isle Beach on Monday, Nov. 14. The group will meet in the Brierwood Golf Club parking lot at 7 p.m. and carpool to the museum for the tour, which will begin at 7:30. The gift shop will be kept open for the group. A regular meeting will be held in the museum meeting room following the tour. All female residents of Brierwood Estates arc invited to attend. Eagle Study Is Bird Club Topic Tom Henson, naturalist with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commis sion, will speak on the North Caro lina bald eagle nesting study at the next meeting of the Brunswick Bird Club. The clubs meets Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the meeting room of Atlantic Telephone Membership Corp. on N.C. 1 30 near Shallotte. Anyone interested in nature and the environment is welcome. Historical Society Meets Brunswick County Historical Society meets Monday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Concord United Meth odist Church on N.C. 211 at Supply.
