General Manager Russell Price said ATMC and 34 other indepen dent telecommunications companies are part of a consortium that also in r hides BellSouth, the Washington Post's American Personal Com munications and the Duke Power subsidiary DukeNct Communica tions Inc. Licenses arc expected to be awarded by the Federal Communi cations Commission (FCC) in early 1995 for what Russell termed a "dif ferent breed of service." The new digital technology now available is more sophisticated than cellular communications and will allow a broader range of high-quality ser vices and devices such as a 3- to 4 ounce personal telephone that can be used anywhere. Price said the consortium is one of many vying for licenses for the new broadcast spectrum, an auction expected to generate S10 to S 1 5 bil lion in federal revenues. The last time a broadcast sector was offered was for cellular service, when a lottery was conducted. ATMC lost in that lottery, but Price said he hopes thai won't he the case this time. "There's no guarantee we'll be able to do it," said Price "But we feel our customers deserve the best and latest in telecommunications technology and service. !f we are successful in our bidding effort, this partnership will allow us to provide these benefits on a timely basis. "We want our subscriber* io Siave the same technological advances as citizens in metropolitan areas." In addition to two 30-megahcrtz licenses across the two-state bidding territory of North Carolina and South Carolina, Price said smaller scale bidding will occur for licenses in smaller, basic trading areas "It will be structured for competi tion." said Price. "But like cable TV, it will be up to the players how much they develop for competition." ATMC is a member-owned com pany established in 1957 to provide telephone service for 500 rural sub scribers in Brunswick County where service was not available. Now 26,000 members receive telephone service. /"XT .L- - . ? . ~ - - ?L,_ un 1 ? v/i IIIU5C nunc man tni pctvvui now also have access to cable TV service, begun by ATMC when no other company was willing to pro vide the service for most Brunswick County residents ass late as 1981. said Russell He predicted that "gen erally all members" should have ac cess to cable TV before the end of 1996.
