THREE RIVERS ROUNDUP Mustangs Maul Scorpions 40-0 North Brunswick High School's football season came to a merciful close Friday night with a 40-0 loss to South Robeson. It was the third straight shutout loss for Coach Garry Bishop's Scorpions, who finished 1-6 in the Three Rivers Conference and 3-7 overall. South Robeson, which posted its sixth shutout win of the year, im proved their record to 5-2 in the league and 8-2 overall. The Mustangs gave up just 37 points during the regular season. The 40-0 loss ended a North Brunswick season that had started with such promise. The Scorpions won three of their first four games but lost their last six by a combined margin of 199-13. North Brunswick, like conference foes East Bladen, Fairmont and Red Springs, did not qualify for the state playoffs that open Friday night. St. Pauls, which tied with East Bladen for the conference champi onship, will open the state 2A play offs at home Friday against South Columbus. The Bulldogs received the confer ence's only berth in the state 2A playoff by virtue of their 44-27 win over East Bladen during the regular season. St. Pauls (6-1, 9-1) has won its last six games, while Waccamaw Conference member South Colum bus (4-2, 7-3) carries a four-game winning streak into the playoffs. Bladenboro (5-2, 7-3) edged out South Robeson (5-2, 8-2) for the Three Rivers Conference's top seed in the state 1A playoffs. The league received three spots in the western bracket. Bladenboro will jopen at home Friday against Jordan-Matthews (5 5), the third-place team out of the Central Tar Heel Conference. South Robeson, which advanced to the state semifinals last year, plays its first-round playoff game on the road against Central Tar Heel Jennies Branch Grabs Second Jennies Branch defeated Bruns wick Islands 15-9, 12-15, 15-1, Monday to take over sole possession of second place in the Brunswick Baptist Association Coed Volleyball League. In Monday night's only other match at Supply Elementary School, Shallotte First Baptist dropped Shell Point 15-11, 15-8, for its first win of season. Four matches are scheduled next Monday. Mt. Pisgah "A" takes on Shallotte First at 6:30 p.m., Bruns wick Islands battles undefeated Mill Creek at 7:30, Shell Point faces Jennies Branch at 8:30 and Mt. Pisgah "B" plays Mt. Pisgah "A" at 9:30. Vbrney's Ace Highlights Third Annual Veterans Tournament Pal Varney's first career hole in one highlighted the third annual Veterans Week Golf Tournament hosted by the Calabash Veterans Golf Association last Friday at Btierwood Golf Club in Shallotte. The Calabash resident carded the ace at the 14th hole, which was playing approximately 149 yards. Vamey used a 7 iron. Witnessing the shot were playing partners Bill McDavit and Walter Benes of Sunset Beach and Joe Ready of Shallotte. The golf tournament featured 72 twosomes that were divided into four men's flights, a mixed flight and a ladies flight. Each twosome counted its low net score per hole. Top finishers in the men's first flight were Ron Gammon and Hal Clayton, who shot net hi and won a three-way match of cards. Runners-up were Joe Steele and Hal Foley. Herman Thompson and Bob Herrc placed third, and Pete Newell and lid Adcock took fourth with 62. Jack Brooks and Paul Turan won the men's second flight with a round of 60, and John Limbcrg and Dick Mee finished second with 61.
