Brierwood M en Victorious In Golf Battle Of Sexes The men defeated ihe women 81 72 in the inaugural "Brierwood Challenge match play tournament Oct. 29 at Brierwood Golf Club. The match pitted 51 members of the Brierwood Men's Golf Asso ciation against 51 members of the Brierwood Ladies Golf Association and Brierwood Ninettes There were 51 individual matches between the men and women using a Nassau format. One point was award ed for the front nine, one for the back nine and one for the overall match. Closest -to-thc-pin winners were Elsie Rickbeil at the third hole. Bob Allwein at the ninth, Sally Dye at the 14th and Bill Pingo at the 17th. Brick Landing Ladies Alice Grossman fired a net 56 and Joe Cavan carded a 57 to lead the top flight in the Brick Landing Plantation Ladies Golf Association tournament last Thursday. Golfers dropped scores on their two worst holes. Flight B winners were Ruth Gardner with 48 and June Beck with 56. Gardner birdied Ihe second hole. Rosemary Dobson led the field in Right C with a net 53. Terry Ehlers finished second with 55. Nifty Niners Marcy Norris shot gross 62 and Molly Cox fired net 36 to lead the way in the Carolina Shores Nifty Niners tournament last Thursday. Runncrs-up included Audrey Card with gross 63 and Eileen Van Audekerk. On a match of cards. Jane Taubel edged Nancy Bradbury for second low net with 37. N C5 Travel League Bill McCroskcy. Ed Miller. John Healy and Ken Bom shot 1 17 to win the Carolina Shores Men's Travel league tournament last Friday at Colonial Charters. Teams counted the two low net scores per hole. Doris Pearce led the way at Bay Tree with net 28. Runners-up were Evelyn Fitzgerald with 28.5 and Maxine Gray with 30. Fitzgerald chipped in at the 14th hole and posted the overall low gross of 115. Gray shot 116 and Pearce finished with 118. Fitzgerald and Gray tied for low net with scores of 76. and Pearce was third with 78. At Brierwood, Evelyn Wuthrich won the nine-hole game with net 27.5. She was followed by Ruth Brown with 28.5 and Mary Ahcam with 29.5. Ruth Brown had the overall low gross of 108 and low net of 75. Carolina Shores Men Bob l^ovaty shot net 66 to win the Carolina Shores Men's Golf Asso ciation tournament last Thursday at Bay Tree's silver course. Runners-up included George Sharp with net 68. Top Finishers in the second flight included Eva Baham with net 34 and Martha Murphy and Carole Klapp with rounds of 36. Roe Walker won the third flight with a 31. Ruth Kivett was second with 33 and Betty Geesey third with 35. Carding birdies were Baham at the second hole and Combs at the 14th Brierwood Ninettes Shirley Eifert shot net 28 to win the Brierwood Ninettes tournament last Thursday. Golfers did not count scores on their two worst holes. Runners-up included Jo Paterson and Carol Soucie with scores of net 31 and Ailecn Sterner with 32. Ruth Hierman had low putts with 16 and Harriet Schuler was second with 17. Soucie had a chip-in at the first hole. Carolina Shores Ladies The team of Jean Sperry, Use Bateman, Ginny Dorshimer and Doris Sandberg shot 122 to win the Carolina Shores Ladies Golf Asso ciation tournament last Thursday at Waterway Hills. Teams counted the two low net scores per hole. Finishing second with 124 was the foursome of Chick Weingarten, Alice Abbcne, Elsie Rack and Ruth Rice. Third place went to the team of Pat Soule, Carolyn D'Avanzo, Mary Johnson and Fran Torgersen with 125. Dorshimer had the low gross of the day with 87. Rack and Johnson tied for low putts with 30 each. Vera McCabe and Bateman had chip-ins. Reporting birdies were Flack, Johnson and Shirley Vazquez with one each and Dorshimer with two. Nine Is Fine Brick Landing Plantation's Nine Is Fine group held its season-ending luncheon last week in North Myrtle Beach, S C. Honorees included Janet Tiede, who had the first flight's low gross average of 51.46. She also was rec ognized for one birdie and the most low scores with nine rounds in the 40s. Bette Squire had the second low est average in the first flight with 58.71. Sccond flight winners included Jane Palmisano with an average gross of 61.75 and Mary Tacea with a 62.45 average. Tacea also had a birdie. Mary McEntee had the third flight's low gross average of 65.59, and Louise Toepfer was second with 65.96. Mary Gillam had the lowest aver age for putts with 18.814 per round. Marian Gill placed second with a 19.150 average. Gillam had one chip-in. Eleanor Butler and Pat Collins were recognized for chip-ins and birdies, and Butler was named most improved golfer. Also honored for chip-ins were Vivian Donlon and Suzann Holmes with one each and Judy Filipski and Eloise Hewett with two apiece. Gauntlet Ladies Menchie Spencer shot net 36 to win the women's golf event last Tuesday at The Gauntlet at St. James Plantation Golfers counted scores on even-numbered holes only and used half handicaps. On Oct. 25, Inge Jaccino was the winner of the "Bingo, Bango, Bongo" tournament at The Gauntlet. She finished with 19 points. Brierwood Scramble The team of Roy Havenga, Andy Micali, Hilda Hall and Barbara Baxter shot 5-under-par 31 to win the nine-hole mixed scramble last Wednesday at Brierwood Golf Club. Jim Roach.
