Woman Dismembered
In U.S. 1 7 Hit-And-Run

Police arc trying to determine
who was driving me firsi of several
vehicles that struck a 54-year-old
woman in a gruesome hit-and-run
accident that spread body parts for a
half mile along U.S. 17 near Lxland
Monday morning.
The victim, identified as Ellen
Smith Marsh of 23rd Street.
Wilmington, appeared to have been
run over by at least three vehicles in
the northbound lane shortly after ft
a.m.. Brunswick County Sheriff's
Detective Steve Mason said.
"We've received several calls
from people who said they ran over
something that might have been a
body," Mason said. "There was a lot
of traffic and I don't think people
were able to tell what it was they
hit."
Eventually, a driver dialed 1 1
from the D & j Mini Mart and re
ported seeing "the remains of a per
son" on the highway near the inter
section of Zion Church Road.
Mason said.
Investigators believe Marsh may
have been trying to reach the conve
nience store after her car broke
down about three miles away on
Green Hill Road, BCSD Detective
Capt. Phil Perry said.
A brown Buick registered in her
name was found there shortly after
the body was discovered. The car
keys, a jacket and a knapsack lay on
the front seat. The car has been im
pounded for further investigation.
Perry said the last time Marsh
was seen by friends, she was "very
intoxicated" and depressed about be
ing turned down for a job. She had
recently undergone psychiatric treat
ment at Raleigh hospital. Perry said.
!t has not been determined if
Marsh had been drinking before she
was hit. Her remains have been tak
en to a state medical examiner's lab
oratory in Jacksonville. Mason said.
Witnesses have said they saw a
woman who might have been Marsh
walking north on the side of U.S. 17
shortly after 6 a.m., Mason said.
Police were also interviewing a
truck driver who reportedly heard
someone on the citizens band radio
say they witnessed the accident.
Marsh is formerly from Georgia,
Perry said. She has recently been
doing engineering work for a com
pany in Wilmington. Police have no
tified her closest relatives, who live
in Pennsylvania, Mason said.
The case has been turned over to
the N.C. Highway Patrol for further
investigation.
