Fire Destroys Home At Grissettown BY SUSAN USHER A Grissettown family lost all their possessions Friday afternoon in a fire that destroyed their small mo bile home just north of U.S. 17 on N.C. Simon and Stephanie Stanley and their three chil dren weren't at home when the Gre in their small blue and white trailer was spotted. Volunteer firefighters from Grissettown-Longwood, Calabash. Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle responded Gnssetiown-l>ongwood VFD Chief Jimmy Clemmons said firefighters were called out at about 3 45 p m As of Friday afternoon the cause of the fire was not known Clemmons said it apparently started in the living room at one end of the 30- by 10-foot home. Within a few minutes the home was engulfed in flames. As firefighters hosed the smoking ruins to cool the fire, the Stanleys watched in silence. Crayola-hued chil dren's toys, some partially melted, lay among the maze of fire hoses stretched across the yard. The Stanleys bought the trailer and moved it onto the rented lot about two months ago, said Stanley. The family had no insurance coverage. The Stanleys lived there with their sons, 1 and 2, and daughter, 1 1. When the fire broke out, Mrs. Stanley was at work at a motel in South Carolina, where she cleans rooms full time. Mr. Stanley was doing some work for another Grisscttown resident. Local VISTA Project Earns Governor's Award Brunswick County Literacy Council's Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) project is a recipi ent of the IW Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Serv ice The project was nominated by Union Llementary School where in 1W2 VISTA volunteers working with the council helped the school secure a Serve America grant tor a program called ATTAC (Adult Tutors Teaching At -Risk Children) BCLC's VISTAs serving for the 1W3-V4 year were Knhard kern. Alicia Peterson and Julie Wallace They were cited in the nomination for helping to expand ATTAC by re cruiting and training volunteers, as sisting in the production of a video about the program, and encouraging the young students to also become volunteers for literacy. The students made bookmarks to distribute at public awareness events and deco rated boxes for collection of books to be added to the Volunteer and Inform. Center's Christmas baskets The literacy council's current VISTA volunteers ? Diane Downer and Amy and Aaron Tate ? accepted the award at a ceremony in Sanford on Nov. 22.
