Kaneka (iris sett is among the players expected to lead the Lady Trojans this year. West Brunswick will open the regular season Dec. 2 at North Bruns wick . McKinnon New Boss At South Brunswick The Ed McKinnon Era at South Brunswick officially begins next Tuesday when the Cougars host Wilmington Laney in the high school basketball season opener for both teams. McKinnon, the new varsity boys' basketball coach at South, brings 17 years of experience to Boiling Spring Lakes but has not coached on the varsity level since 1987. He served as the junior varsity boys' basketball coach for the last four years at Scotland County High School. The Robeson County native hasn't coached a varsity squad since leaving Chatham Central seven years ago. McKinnon has big shoes to fill at South Brunswick, where he takes over for veteran head coach Gene Doane. In eight years at Boiling Spring Lakes, Doane turned the South Brunswick b*sketb*?'l program from a perennial cellar-dweller into a perennial conference contender. Under Doane's leadership, the Cougars advanced to the state play offs five consecutive years, put to gether four straight 20-win seasons and captured a regular-season con ference championship and two con ference tournament titles. South Brunswick finished fifth in the Waccamaw Conference last year with a 4-8 record and 9-15 overall. This Week's Tide Table NOVEMBER HIGH LOW Da? Date AM. PM. AM. After finishing 9-3 in the Wac camaw Conference and 17-10 over all last season, South Brunswick's girls enter the 1994-95 campaign seeking their fourth straight league title. Coach Mike Isenberg will need to replace last year's top two players. Lost to graduation were guard Tam eka Davis and center Grika Bryant, a two-time county player of the year now playing at North Carolina Central University. Following next Tuesday's season opener against Laney, the Cougars will entertain Hoggard on Dec. 2. BOARDING FOR I DOGS & CATS PATE OPPONENT i South Faces Long Season On Road BY DOUG RUTTER If South Brunswick High School's wrestling team has a successful 1994-95 season, at least part of the credit will have to go to one of its heavyweights ? the team bus. With the Cougars traveling to compete in seven tournaments and hosting only four dual team matches all year. South Brunswick will be asking a lot of the team wheels. Fortunately for the Cougars, nine of their 13 road matches are in Brunswick or New Hanover counties. The others are in Fayetteville, Morehead City, Lejeune, and Socastee, S.C. "I like to go to a lot of tournaments because that gets you ready for the regional and state tour naments at the end of the year," said first-year coach Ross Little. Little is a former wrestler at Pembroke State University and was a volunteer assistant coach last season at New Hanover High School. He has taken over the South Brunswick wrestling program from Don Millwood, who guided the Cougars to an 18-6 record and the county championship in 1993 and an 8-11 mark last season. "We're real young. I have one senior and one junior and everyone else is a sophomore or fresh man in their first year of wrestling," Little said. "We're learning every day and improving every day." Little will ask a lot this winter from senior 171 pounder Mike Bethel and junior 152-pounder Brian Bracey. "I'm looking for those guys to lead the team and carry us a little bit. They are the only experi enced wrestlers we have," Little said. South hosted Hoggard in a preseason scrim mage last week, but the Cougars better not get to used to the comforts of home. Ten of their first 1 1 matches, including five multi-team tournaments, will be on the road. The Cougars were scheduled to open the sea son Tuesday night at home against North Brunrwick. South will travel to Wilmington this Saturday for the Laney Challenge Tournament. The Cougars return to Laney next Tuesday for a dual team match and again next Saturday, Dec. 3, for the Laney Invitational.
