Meeting at the school board of fices in South port, Brunswick County Board of Education mem bers unanimously approved Supply Elementary School's differentiated pay plan, saying they had been look ing at an outdated version at their last meeting when the plan was questioned, said Chairman Donna Baxter. On a 3-2 vote the board accepted pay plans for Shallotte and Leland middle schools, with Baxter joining members Polly Russ and Thurman Cause to support the plans. Bill Fairley and Yvonne Bright opposed. "I understand Mr. Fairley 's con cern." said Baxter, "but I'm tired of fighting it. And these plans hadn't really changed; they were basically the same when we first approved them in May." Fairley had objected to the plans earlier because the school staffs had voted to use differentiated pay to re ward faculty and staff on point plans rather than using the money for staff development as first proposed. Schools had a chance to revise their plans this fall because the legis lature expanded the differentiated pay plan to include non-certified staff for Supply Women Charged With Park Break-in Shallotte Police arrested two local women in connection with a Nov. 19 break -in of a residence at Carter's Mobile Home Park. Shanda Haley, 25, and Brenda Im porter, 35, both of the Supply area, were charged with one count each of breaking and entering and larceny, said Chief Rodney Gausc. Lt. Carey Gaskins of the Shallotte Police Department charged the sus pects with breaking into a mobile home behind First Baptist Church. Gause said items taken from the residence included $155 in coins, a pocketbook, wallet, microwave oven, VCR, crock pot, two bank bags and two checkbooks. All of the items were later returned to the own er. Haley and Porter were arrested af ter a vehicle they were riding in was stopped by the Brunswick County Sheriff's Department, Gause said. Fairley had wanted award of bonus pay tied to actual achievement of improvement goals. Most schools in the county voted instead to reward effort. The board also awarded a $40,000 bid to Ogden Utility of Wilmington for work on a drainage project at Supply Elementary School and a $9,900 one-year contract to Testco for pest control. They adopted a resolution encour aging the state legislature to set aside additional sales tax revenues for school capital improvements. "We had received resolutions from five or six other school sys tems on this," said Baxter. "The state needs to do something because the schools have construction needs and there's just not enough money." An all-new board of education will be sworn into office Monday, Dec. 5, in a special meeting at Supply Elementary School, follow ing a reception for outgoing board members sponsored by the Bruns wick County chapter of the North Carolina Association of Educators. ?
