Dogs Advance
Bladenboro's Bulldogs defeated
Mount Airy 29-19 last Friday to ad
vance to the semifinals of the state
1A high school football playoffs.
Coach Jake Smith's Bulldogs (10
3) will host Murphy (13-0) in the
western championship game this
Friday at 7:30 p.m
Bladcnboro finished third in the
Three Rivers 1 A/2A Conference and
has won six straight games
Murphy, coming off a 3-7 season
last year, won the state 1A champi
onship in 1986. 1987 and 1991.
Calabash Veterans Play Lockwood
The team of Bill Johnson, Jerry
Way, Urban Aquilino and Frank
Foley shot 201 to win the Calabash
Veterans Golf Association tourna
ment last Friday at Lockwood Golf

Teams counted the three low net
scores per hole. Finishing second
with 206 was the foursome of John
Limberg, Bob Phillips, Dick Ringer
and Gary Viles.
Dick Leaman, Art Paige, Phil
Tavani and Ed White placed third
with 214.
On Nov. 19, the Calabash Vete
rans hosted a best ball tournament at
River Hills. Each team counted one
low net score on par 5 holes, two
low scores on par 4s and three low
scores on par 3s.
The event was cut to 14 holes due
to darkness. Finishing first with 92
was the team of Jerry Lupetkis, John
Pape, Dick Mee and John Nelson.
Walt Benes, John Limberg, Bob
Lawall and Dick Ringer placed sec
ond with 105, followed by Cliff
Massey, Bill Seip, Nils Burgeson
and Bill McDavit with 108.
The Calabash Veterans will play
this Friday at Bay Tree. Show time
is 7:30 a.m. for the individual low
gross and low net tournament.
Brierwood Ladies
Janet Twomey shot net 52 to win
the top flight in the Brierwood
Ladies Golf Association tournament
last Tuesday.
Golfers dropped scores on their
two worst holes and used full handi
caps. Runners-up in Right A were
Ann Causer with net 56 and Rose
Reitcr and Ncl Justice with rounds
of 58.
Flight B winners included Marie
Dolan with 53, Shirley Groff with
54 and Joan Cowie with 55. Helene
Baker and Pat Wolff tied for fourth
placc with scores of 58.
In Right C, Janice Owens led the
way with a net 53. She was followed
by Esther Smith with 58, Sally Dye
with 59 and Molly Hoke with 60.
Reporting birdies were Causer at
the fifth hole, Dolan at the eighth
and Twomey at the 15th.
Carolina Shores Men
George Sandberg and Bob Lovaty
tied for the individual low net with
rounds of 65 in the Carolina Shores
Men's Golf Association Turkey
Shoot Nov. 21 at Brierwood.
Jim Deehan and Dick Brooks tied
for third at net 68. Tied for fifth with
scores of 69 were Bill Haupt,
Murray Palmer, Ed Johnson and
John Romero.
Ewart Lockyer and A1 Omundsen
shot 70s. Posting rounds of 71 were
Bill Goetschius, John Farley, Dick
Stewart and Bob Lupean.
In the men's tournament Nov. 19
at Carolina Shores, first place went
to the team of Ed Garvey, Murray
Palmer, Bruce Kibblehouse and
Kirke Burdick with a score of 127.
Each team counted the two low
net scores per hole. Finishing second
with 131 was the foursome of
Wayne Johnson, Bill Haupt, Dick
Pearce and John Romero.
Bill Teschler, Jerry Downcs, Mike
Stachowiak and Nat Pcavy placed
third with 132.
Closest-to-the-pin winners were
Bill Wannstcdt at the third hole and
Dick Malatesta at the 16th.
Brierwood Men
The team of Howard Scutt, Neal
McCall, John Klossner and Matt
Monaghan shot 128 to win the
Brierwood Men's Golf Association
tournament last Thursday.
Each foursome counted the two
low net scores per hole. The win
ning team finished 16 shots under
par.
On Nov. 21, the team of Joe Distl,
Miles Umberger and Jack Akers
shot 1 19 to win a two best ball event
at Brierwood. The winners were 25
under par and used a blind draw for
their fourth score.
Finishing second at 20-under-par
124 was the foursome of Paul
Dunfee. Howard Scuit, Bob Hoke
and Jerry Smith.
The team of Jerry Lula, Odic
Johnson, Jerry Wolff and a blind
draw placed third with 125.
Brierwood Scramble
Jim Bryant, Rose Reiter, Dede
Havenga and Chris O'Shea shot 34
to win the nine-hole mixed scramble
last Wednesday at Brierwood.
Finishing second with 35 was the
foursome of Roy Havenga, Alice
Micali, Joan O'Shea and Jim
Guffee.
