PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Fowler Chosen Alumnus Of The Year Steve Fooler of Nakina was re to an outstanding Head Start alum nus in recognition of life achieve ments, said Faye Gore, assistant Head Start director and education coordinator assistant for Four County Community Services. Four County educates 900 chil dren in 20 Head Start centers in Brunswick, Bladen, Columbus, Robeson, Scotland and Hoke coun ties. One alumni award is given from each of the 33 Head Start pro grams in North Carolina. Fowler participated in Head Start in 1974-75. He is the son of Jeanctte and Willard Fowler of Nakina and the nephew of Bunn Stanley of Grissettown and Shelton Stanley of Ash. He is a 1988 graduate of Nakina High School and a 1991 graduate of Wake Forest University with a de gree in communications. He is a staff writer for The News Reporter in Whiteville and has interned in the U.S. Capital officcs of Rep. Charlie Rose and Sen. Terry Sanford. cently named Alumnus of the Year by Four County Com munity Ser vices Inc. and the N C. Head Start Associa tion. The award is given by the state conference Star Volunteer Cynthia Smith is volunteer of the month for Bolivia Elementary School. She is also president of the Parent-Teacher Association. A lifelong resident of Brunswick C nnntv Smith orarluateri from South Brunswick High School in 1975 and from UNC-Wilmington in 1979 with a B.S. degree in parks and recre ation. She has been a member of Bolivia School's PTA for two years, a room mother for five years, and a member of the church choir for many years. She lives in Winnabow with her husband Splencer and daughter Ashley. Honored At Bolivia Gwen Foxworth is employee of the month for Bolivia Eleme ntary School. She is a clas sroom teacher for the first and-. second combination class. She has a bachelor of sci ence degree from the Uni versity of South Carolina at Colum bia. She is a member of Trinity Methodist Church and works with the children's choir. Foxworth is married to Doc Foxworth and they have two chil dren. They live in Southport. New Sailor Navy Seaman Recruit Jason M. Stephens, a 1994 graduate of South Brunswick High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recmil Training C nmmand. Great Lakes, III. During the eight-week program, Stephens completed a variety of training which included classroom study, practical hands-on instruction and an emphasis on physical fitness. In particular, Stephens learned naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and a variety of safety skills required for working around ships and aircraft. Stephens and other recruits also received instruction on Navy core values. New Soldiers Two North Brunswick High School graduates have completed Army basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. They are Pfc. Vincent D. Harris, son of Robert L. and Louise Harrison of Blackwell Road, Le land, and Pvt. Otis A. Mapson Jr., son of Otis A. and Peggy O. Mapson of Davidson Avenue, Leland. Both are 1993 NBHS graduates. During the training, students re ceived instruction in drill and cere monies, weapons, map reading, tac tics, military courtesy, military jus tice, first aid and Army history and traditions. CLUB BRIEFS Hope Harbor Gets Cellular Telephone Calabash Elks Auxiliary 2679 raised $I.4(K) with a recent luncheon to benefit Hope Harbor Home. The funds were for the purchase and maintenance of a cellular tele phone for the domestic violence shelter. Spring Cellular of Wilmington donated the telephone and its hook up, leaving the Elks' gift to pay monthly bills for the service. NARFE To Meet The Brunswick County Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) will hold its monthly meeting at the Sandfiddler Restau rant near Southport on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at noon. An installation ceremony for the newly elected officers for the com ing year will take place, and all members are being asked to bring a child's Christmas gift. BCC Honorary Inducts 14 Students Fourteen Brunswick Community College students were inducted into the National Vocational-Technical Honor Society in a ceremony held recently in the BCC Student Center. Society President Glen Blake and chapter advisor Velma Williams presented each inductee with member ship pins and certificates. The inductees came from eight different curriculum programs. Dwarka Ramphal. pastor of Ocean View Free Will Baptist Church and part-time BCC instructor, gave an inspirational installation address. The program also included a musical selection by South Brunswick High School sophomore Edmund L Randolph and a piano processional played by JTPA sec retary [.aila Holden. Members of (he chapter must maintain a grade point average of 3.6() or better in a curriculum program. They must also have completed 24 hours or more in their field of study to be eligible for membership.
