NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC TRIHALOMETHANES FOUND IN DRINKING WATER The water supply system serving your home reports that recent tests ot drink ing water showed higher levels of total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) than is allowed by the state and federal drinking water regulations. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets drinking water standards and has determined that TTHMs are a health concern at certain levels of exposure. These chemicals are by-products of the chkxination process used to disinfect drinking water These chemicals form when chlorine reacts with organic precursors in the source water. TTHMs have been shown to cause cancer in lab oratory animals such as rats and mice when the animals are exposed to high lev els over their lifetimes. Chemicals that cause cancer in laboratory animals also may increase the risk of cancer in humans who are exposed at lower levels over long periods of time. EPA has set forth the enforceable drinking water standard of TTHMs at 0.10 parts per million (ppm) to reduce the risk of cancer which has been observed in laboratory animals. Drinking water which meets this standard is asso ciated with little to none of the risk and should be considered safe. The water supply system owners are working with the Division of Environmental Health to determine the best solution to this problem. Alternatives being considered are: (1) changes in the treatment process; (2) installation of new equipment which would reduce the TTHM level; (3) elimination of the TTHM source; and (4) possible new sources of water. We will continue to notify you of the status of this problem quarterly until it t3 corrected if you h3vt> any questions regarding this notice, please contact: Chris C happell.
