VIC Needs More Food, Volunteers
To Ready 581 Christmas Baskets

stuffing mix, cake mix...

still needed as Vfolunteer and Infor
mation Center (VIC) workers begin
packing holiday baskets for distribu
tion to 581 needy families across
Brunswick County just before Christ
mas.
"We try to give each family
everything people traditionally have
for a Christmas dinner," said Dir
ector Anita Oldham. "We're Mill in
need of some food items, particular
ly canned vegetables
Along with the makings of a fes
tive dinner, each basket includes
presents for family members and,
through the Bmnswick County
Literacy Council's Holiday Book
Share project at least one book.
VIC is still accepting contribu
tions of food and gifts Some tags
specifying gift suggestions for chil
dren and elderly family members arc
still available on "angel" trees at
NationsBank and UCB branch of
fices, Rose's Store in Southport,
Wal-Mart in Shallotte and several
area churches.
Food items and wrapped, tagged
gifts need to be brought to VIC im
mediately for inclusion in the bas
kets, she said. Items can be taken di
rectly to the school bus garage at the
Brunswick County Government
Center, where the baskets are al
ready being assembled.
Oldham said more volunteers will
be needed on Dec. 19 to complete
assembly, then on Dec. 20 and 21 to
help distribute them to families.
Last year VIC provided Christ
mas baskets to 750 households,
nearly 200 more than this year, and
Oldham isn't certain why the num
ber has dropped.
"Maybe people are doing better,"
she said. "We're hoping that's the
reason."
