Scorpions After opening the season with home losses (o Laney and Hoggard, the South Brunswick High School girl* basketball team got on the win ning track last week with road wins over North Brunswick and Tar Heel. A three-pointer by Michelle Sellers with 25 seconds remaining lifted the Lady Cougars to a 32-31 win over Tar Heel last Wednesday. South Brunswick started slow and trailed 7-4 after the first quarter The Lady Cougars led 16-14 at halftime, but Tar Heel regained the lead in the third quarter and led 25-21 heading into the final period. Shcba Fullwood led South Bruns wick with 16 points, eight rebounds and eight steals. Natalie Smith fin ished with seven points. "Shcba was our offense tonight," South Brunswick coach Mike Isenberg said. "Of course, most of her points resulted from good de fense which led to easy baskets " "LaTonya Lee also did a good job of running the team in the second half. Right now our defense is way ahead of our offense, although it could also stand improvement," lsenberg said. South Brunswick notched its first win of the season last Tuesday, beat ing North Brunswick 46-16 in I x land Lee scored nine points, and Smith and Fullwood had eight apiece to lead the Lady Cougars. South led 15-2 after one quarter and 26-6 at halftime. Candace McKoy and Petra Ludd had four points each for North Brunswick. South Brunswick (2-2) was scheduled to host North Brunswick Tuesday night. The Lady Cougars play at Hoggard Thursday and at l^aney Friday. South Wins Two Matches At New Hanover Tourney South Brunswick, led by Brian Bracey and Mike Bethel, won two out of four matches at the New Hanover Invitational high school wrestling tournament last Saturday in Wilmington. Coach Ross Little's Cougars de feated North Brunswick 42-38 and Smithfield-Selma 52-0. South Brunswick lost matches to South View 55-18 and Havelock 51-15. Bracey won all four of his tourna ment matches at 160 pounds, while Bethel went undefeated at 171 pounds. Finishing 3-1 were Dale Linkous at 112 pounds and Derek Cordle at 119. In dual team action last week, the Cougars suffered a 40-38 loss at North Brunswick on Thursday and a 48-21 loss at Hoggard on Tuesday. In the North Brunswick match, a two-point penalty for misconduct gave the Scorpions their first win of the season. South Brunswick (3-8) was scheduled to wrestle Tuesday at West Brunswick and Wednesday at New Hanover. The Cougars will compete in a tournament at West Carteret on Dec. 20. Cougars End Skid At Lejeune The South Brunswick High School boys basketball team ended a four-game losing streak Friday night with a 65-56 win at Lejeune. Senior guard Johnny Scott pumped in 18 points and Devin Johnson added 10 to lead the Cougars, who recorded their first win since Nov. 30. "I think defensively Friday was our best game," said South Bruns wick coach Ed McKinnon. "I saw some light at the end of the tunnel. I think we're getting a liule better." Jeff Shew scored nine points, and Paul Pelham and Izesta Brown chip ped in eight apiece for the Cougars. South Brunswick led 35-32 after three quarters and made 16 of 18 free throws in the final period. A " Collis Arrick scored 19 points and Derrick Williams added 18 to lead the Lejcune Devilpups. The Cougars were coming off a 63-44 loss at Tar Heel on Wed nesday. Terrence Rogers led the Panthers with 20 points, while Scott paced the Cougars with 19 points. South Brunswick (2-4) had a home game scheduled Tuesday night against North Brunswick. The Cougars travel to Wilmington Thurs day and Friday for games against Hoggard and Laney, respectively.
