Four Are Winners In Hometown Holidays Four people were winners is the second week of drawings in the South Brunswick Islands Chamber of Commerce annual Hometown Holidays promotion. Winning 25 chamber dollars each were Bill Grossman of Shallotte, who registered at Shallotte Cleaners; Janet Thomas of Longwood, who rirf""* at The Brunswick Hospital; Grove Grant of Longwood, who registered al Pawn USA; and Vooda Mosley of Leland, who registered at Brunswick Community College. More than 2,000 people have registered in the weekly drawings so far. Thirty -si* businesses are participating in the promotion, which con tinues through Dec. 21. New Leland Library Is Named 'Outstanding' The Brunswick County Library's new Leland Library building re ceived the "outstanding new facili ty" award from the N.C. Public Library Directors Association at the annual meeting Dec. I . The association is made up of head librarians from North Caro lina's county and city library sys tems. The award is given each year to a new public library building that other librarians consider especially attractive and functional. The Leland Library was designed by John Sawyer Architects of Wilmington. Harnett Construction Company was the general contrac tor. The building was funded by Brunswick County government, by a state library construction grant, and by a community fundraising effort led by Brunswick County Library Board of Trustees member Edith Tillman of Leland. The new Leland Library is open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Saturdays from 9 a.m. until I p.m.. and Sunday after noons from 2-6 p.m. It remains open on Wednesdays until 8 p.m. Board Member Offers Tips For Teaching Professionals Maintain a portfolio to depict pro fessional development, document disciplinary actions and be very careful about unsuperv ised students Those were the suggestions new Brunswick County Board of Educ ation member and retired teacher Pat Brown asked representatives of the Brunswick County Association of Educators at their Dec. 6 meeting to relay to all BCAE members. Superintendent Ralph Johnston and acting principals' representative Ed Lemon also attended the meeting. Brown said documenting discipli nary actions will protect the teachers and help administrators and the school board ensure proper proce dures are followed, a BCAE news release said. President Mary Yates, in her clos Workshop Planned To Discuss Waste The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will hold a work shop session Thursday, Dec. 15, at 6 p.m. to discuss solid waste. The meeting will take place in the commissioners' chamber, Bruns wick County Government Center, Bolivia. Workshop sessions are open to the public. Eastern Health Alliance Is Approved By State A proposal to link 39 eastern North Carolina counties, including Brunswick, into one powerful health care purchasing alliance has been approved by the State Health Plan Purchasing Alliance Board, accord ing to a news release Tuesday from the office of Lt. Gov. Dennis A. Wicker. "Right now small businesses are being priced out of the health care insurance market," said Wicker, who is board chairman. "This new al liance is going to help bring down those costs so more of our working families can get good health care coverage.** The Chambers of Eastern North Carolina, which represents 49 cham bers of commerce across the region, has been selected to sponsor the al liance for eastern North Carolina. The alliance will be managed by small business members and will re ceive a one-time grant from the state to start the process. Of North Carolina's estimated one million uninsured, most are small business workers and their de pendents. Wicker said. More than 30,000 small businesses employing nearly a quarter of a million people will be eligible to join the new al liance, he added.
