GOV. JIM HUNT honors benefactors Odell and Virginia Williamson during the Aug. 10 dedication of the Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College. COLLEGE MARKS 1 5TH ANNIVERSARY New BCC Programs Create Space Squeeze Brunswick Community College marked its 15th year with dedication of an auditorium and a search on multi ple fronts for ways to ease a space crunch caused by growing pains. BCC recently has added allied health, aquaculture, recreational grounds management and human resources development programs, and is also seeking increased de mand for general education and cosmetology courses. More space is also needed at its training building in Lcland Industrial Park. Planning began with architect John Sawyer for a new 40,(XX) square-foot allied health laboratory and class room building that will be built on the Supply main campus with $4 million in proceeds from a statewide bond referendum. Efforts failed to obtain additional state money toward construction of another building for recreational grounds management and aquaculture. Later in the year ? I BCC submitted a ore-anDlication with the hone Mr of obtaining a $1.5 million or more grant from the federal Economic Development Adminis tration. Talks began with Carolina Power & Light Co. about the possibility of obtaining a prefabricated building no longer used at the power plant. In addition to adding space, staff was looking to see if existing resources and space could be put to better use. Following review of seven programs, the college re designed the low-enrollment auto technology program and changed the real estate degree program to a certifi cate program to reflect local need. As program reviews continue, trustees asked administrators to take a hard look at shutting down traditional vocational or other pro grams for which there was low demand to make room for programs that would better meet local needs. BCC added Doug Holland as lead instructor for aqua culture and also a science instructor; Helen Stewart, math; and John R. Cooke, history and political science; and hired Avone Teadwell to direct the new human re sources development program. Dedication of the Odell Williamson Auditorium, fin ished two years behind schedule but within budget at $3.5 million, was delayed until Aug. 10 so that Gov. Jim Hunt could be the featured speaker. Recognized at the event were Odell and Virginia Williamson, Ocean Isle Beach developers and benefactors. The 1 ,500-seat facil ity was named for Mr. Williamson, who established a $500,000 endowment to provide for its professional management. The auditorium was built with proceeds of a 1985 countywide bond referendum. In the fall manag er Michael Sapp launched the auditorium's first sub scription season. At year's end contractors were com pleting final touches that included a new, larger water line to insure fire safety at the auditorium. On Aug. 19, BCC held its 14th commencement in the auditorium, recognizing 213 curriculum and 116 GED graduates. More than a year after the former business instructor 1 filed suit after her contract was not renewed for . i a seventh year, BCC trustees reached a court mediated settlement with Jane Page of South port. She received a $25,000 tax-free pay ment and a statement from the college acknowl edging that while discrepancies were found in her class attendance records, BCC had no evi dence Page intentionally falsified the records. Page said she filed suit not for the money, but to call attention to problems she said still exist at BCC. She claimed her outspokenness against the administra tion led to nonrenewal of her contract. The college said the decision was made on recommendation of her super visor and because auditors found "serious discrepancies" in attendance records that could have affected BCC's re ceipt of federal student aid and state funding. In October college trustees elected Dean A. Walters, general manager of Sea Trail Corporation, as their new chairman. A member of the board since mid-1993, he succeeded David Kelly, who chose not to seek re -elec tion after transfer to CP&L's Raleigh corporate head quarters. Kelly, who had chaired the trustees since 1986, planned to continue maintaining residency at Oak Island and complete the remaining VA years of his term on the board. Second Fort Fisher Battle To Be Re-Enacted For 1 30th Anniversary Fort Fisher State Historic Site will commemorate the 1 30th anniversary of the Second Battle of Fort Fisher from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, by recreating scenes from the battle. The program will feature hun dreds of re-enactors. Fireworks will simulate the bombardment. Visitors will step back in time to the night 130 years ago and become soldiers reinforcing the main assault who saw the destruction wrought by the largest naval bombardment in the world prior to World War I. "Explosions will shake the ground as bursts of light illuminate the nightmare of the wounded and dead." according a news release trom the N.C. Department of Cul tural Resources. "Smoke will hang over the bat tlefield. Cries for help and defiance will be heard amid the rattle of mus ketry. The visitor will learn the hell of combat through pure sensory per ception." Historic site spokesman Leland Smith said, "We hope to illustrate what those men went through here 130 years ago. By doing this we can gain a greater appreciation of the importance of this place, and a greater appreciation of those men that fought here. A donation of $2 per person will be asked to help cover the cost of special effects. "Wear warm, comfortable cloth ing that you do not mind getting a little dirty," Smith said. He also ad vised that the program would not be suitable for young children unless they are accompanied by an adult. Disney and Epcot!
