Nashville Writers, Musicians To Headline CCU Concert
"Nashville Writers in the Round,"
a concert by country music song
writers and musicians Tony Arata.
Kirk "J'lly Roll" Johnson, Scott
Miller and George McCorkle, will
be performed Sunday, Jan. 15, at 3
p.m. at Coastal Carolina Univer
sity's Wheelwright Auditorium in
Conway, S.C.
Tickets are $12, or $5 for students.
The artists will perform Nashville
tunes and discuss current musical
trends. They received a standing
ovation following their performance
at Coastal last year.
Tony Arata moved to Nashville
from his native Savannah eight
years ago. His single, "The Dance,"
was sung by Garth Brooks and re
ceived numerous honors including
the Academy of Country Music
Sting of the Year in 1991; a Grammy
nomination in 1991; Billboard num
ber-one song in 1990; and the most
performed sting in Radio & Records
in 1990.
Arata has recently written num
ber-one singles "Here I Am" for
Patty Loveless, " I'm Holding My
Own " for Lee Roy Parnell, and
"Dreaming With My Eyes Open " for
Clay Walker.
Kirk "Jelly Roll" Johnson started
nz ? ? ? ? ? ?
playing the harmonica at age 19 and
is now one of the most sought-after
harmonica players in Nashville.
From 1979 until 1987, Johnson
played concerts across the United
States with Con Hunley. The group
opened for Alabama, the Oak Ridge
Boys, Loretta Lynn and Emmylou
Harris. Since moving to Nashville in
1984, Johnson has recorded with
Randy Travis, Trisha Yearwood,
John Michael Montgomery, Reba
McEntire. Kenny Rogers, Alabama,
Suzy Boguss, the Gatlin Brothers
and others. He has played on nine
gold and eight platinum albums.
Scott Miller began writing songs
as a child and formed a band at age
10. He is a former Gulf Coast shrim
per and shipyard worker from
Pascagoula, Miss. He moved to
Nashville, where he worked various
jobs and was befriended by a hit
songwriter/country star who signed
him to his first publishing deal. For
more than 10 years. Miller has been
writing songs recorded by acts such
as Mark Chestnut, Clay Walker,
Asleep at the Wheel, Delbert Mc
Clinton, SKB and Joel Sonier. His
songs have appeared in major mo
tion pictures and on television.
George McCorkle was a guitarist

kle's hit songs such as "Fire on the
Mountain, " their first charted hit.
"Last of the Singing Cowboys, " and
"Silverado. " McCorkle left the band
in 1984 and moved lo Conway in
1988, where he bought a commer
cial glass company. After talking
with Charlie Daniels. McCorkle
moved to Nashville in 1992 and be
gan co-writing songs. His latest hit
single, "William and Mary," was
recorded by Davis Daniel and re
leased last fall.
