North Brunswick's Girls Relay Team Finished An Impressive First At State Championships (Confined From Page 1-D)) cess. After storming its way to a 13-1 record and first-place finish in the Three Rivers Conference, North's softball team advanced to the state 1A semifinals before suffering a 3-2 loss to Alleghany. The Lady Scorpions put together an 11 -game winning streak during their run to the league title and fin ished 22-5 overall. On the baseball diamond. Coach Keith Moore's Scorpions also cap tured the Three Rivers Conference title after winning all 14 of their league games. North advanced to the third round of the state playoffs and finished the with a record of 20-6, despite losing four of its first six games. Leading the Scorpions was a lethal pitching combination of junior right-hander Casey McBridc and se nior lefty Paul Mintz. McBride, named county co-player of the year along with West Bruns wick's Eric Johnson, later acccpted a scholarship offer from the Uni versity of North Carolina at Greens boro. Not to be outdone. North Bruns wick's boys and girls track teams enjoyed unprecedented success in 1994. Regular-season records were 33-3 for the girls and 25-6 for the boys. Both squads captured conference championships, and the girls also won the county title and finished second in the region and seventh in the state. The girls 800-meter relay team of Valerie Smith, Kim Radford, L'Kisha Pretty and Crystal Davis capped the year with a first-place finish at the state championships. The West Brunswick boys track team, winners of five straight con ference titles in the 1970s, showed signs of making a comeback in 1994. The Trojans won the county meet and finished 21-4 under first year coach Wes Shoemaker. Coach Mike Alderson's Trojan baseball team also enjoyed success last spring, tying for second place in the Waccamaw Conference. West won its last six regular-season games and finished 14-10 overall. South Brunswick's hardballers finished 8-16, losing in the first round of the playoffs to Northeast Guilford. The softball teams at West Bruns wick and South Brunswick both struggled in '94. West's final record of 10-16 was its best in three years Stevens resigned in July to take a coaching job at (ioldsboro High School. Coach Brcnda Council's Lady Trojans advanced to the state play oflfs for the fourth consccutivc year and finished K-17 overall last winter was unkind to both the boys and girls cage teams at North Brunswick, where the two squads combined for just nine victo ries.
