Your Old Trees And Other
Trimmings Make Merry Mulch
reople seem to put a lot of time into selecting and
decorating the perfect live Christmas tree, yet on the
day after Christmas, the same tree has been stripped
and thrown out in less time than it takes to complete
one verse of "Jingle Bells."
when you get ready to dismantle your tree, consid
er the following: Christmas trees and other evergreen
trimmings are considered yard wastes and cannot be
disposed of with household garbage. State law requires
that these "green" wastes be collected and disposed of
separately.
Here in Brunswick County, yard wastes including
leaves, grass, limbs, dean lumber and Christmas trees
are stockpiled at the landfill and ground into a mulch.
The mulch, when placed around plants in the garden,
improves moisture retention of the soil, protects rooLs
and keeps down weeds. In order to keep the mulch
clean and attractive, the yard wastes and wood debris
must not contain any trash, plastic, metal or treated or
painted wood.
This year you can bring your tree to either of the
county's two solid waste convenience sites, three trans
fer stations or the county landfill, said Heather E.
Sandncr, Brunswick County recycling coordinator.
Convenient sites are on Oxpen Road near Holden
Beach and on N.C. 904 near Sunset Beach. They are
open Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. until 7 p.m.
and Sunday, 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.
The transfer stations are in Leland, Southport and
Ocean Isle Beach. Tney aic open Monday through
Saturday, 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
The landfill, off U.S. 17 in Supply, is open Monday
through Saturday, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
If you live within one of the towns and receive gar
bage collection, check with your town hall or garbage
hauler about any special collections for trees. Some
beach communities in the past have used the trees for
erosion control.
"When it is time to retire your tree, do not place it
in with your household garbage or in any green box or
other container not designated for yard wastes,"
Sandner said. "And be sure to remove all decorations,
tinsel, lights and garlands before putting your tree out
or bringing it to a drop-off site."
Mulch produced at the landfill stockpile is avail
able to the public at no charge. For more information,
call the landfill at 253-4660 or the recycling program
at 253-4488.
