Thanksgiving Turkey Football !
Our own Jimmie Brown is on the
last lap of the way to baseball fame.
Everybody remembers Jimmie, star
, baseball and basketball player at
Stfite. During his college career
Jimmie played shortstop and third
base on the Hertford team, where he
was very popular. A year after
playing with Hertford Jimmie step
ped into the Piedmont loop, playing
with Greensboro. Last year Jimmie
held down the hot corner for Ro
chester,. New York, at that time be
ing owned by the St. Louis Card
inals. A few days ago he was sold
by the Cards to the Boston Red
Socks, and next summer he will
probably see active service in big
league baseball.
The boys' basketball team of the
P. C. H. S. is progressing rapidly.
The. boys are working into fine shape
and will soon be ready for a match.
They are getting used to the hard
Wood and are showing up well. Some
scrimmaging has been going on for
the past several days.
The girls' basketball team took a
hard punch on the nose when their
coach, Miss Nancy Woods, was senl
to the hospital for an appendicitis
operation. This is hard on the girls,
as they have a swell team and were
getting in fine shape. Here's hop
ing Miss Woods will soon be able to
be back on the job.
The Edenton Aves defeated Garner
Friday afternoon 13-0 to capture
Class B conference championship.
Those Edenton boy3 sure do play
football. Still no team has crossed
their goal line this season. They go
to Chapel Hill to play the state
Championship game next week. Let's
back theem up.
Barclay, captain of the U. N. C.
football squad, who wa3 named on
the All Southern team, may be men
tioned by gome sports writers on the
All American squad. Who says these
North Carolina boys can't play ball ?
Corn-Hog Growers

Timely Questions On
Farm Answered
. i ;
Question: Should hogs be taken
off feed before they are killed?
Answer: Yes. The animals should
not have any feed for . at least 24
hours before they are slaughtered.
It is easier to get a, good bleed when
the system- is not gorged with food
and the meat always cures better
when the small blood vessels are free
from blood and food particles. The
animals, however, should have plenty
of water before them at all times so
as to flush out the intestines.
Question: Will the use of artificial
light increase egg production?
Answer: This method of stimulating-production
is being used with
success in majay parts ot the country.
The use of artificial lights is to
lengthen the feeding hours which will
increase mash consumption and this
will naturally increase egg produc
tion. The lights should be so regu
lated that the birds have from 12 to
14 hours a day in which to eat. Be
sure that the entire house is well
lighted. Two 40-watt bulb3 for each
400 square feet of floor space will
give sufficient light provided that
each bulb has a reflector about 16
inches in diameter and four inches
deep. Extension Circular No. 158
gives the various systems of lighting
most commonly used and this can be
secured free upon application to the
agricultural editor at State College.
Question: Who pays hc process
ing tax on cotton?
Answer: This tax is paid by the
consumer when any product manu
factured from cotton is purchased.
It is added to the manufactured ar
ticle before it is sold to the retail
merchant. The rate is 4.2 cents a
pound net weight of cotton used in
the manufactured article. The aver
age amount paid by the consumer is
about 8 cents on sheets; 3 1-2 cents
on a work shirt; 8 1-4 cents on a
pair of overalls and about one cent
per yard on unbleached .muslin.
Two hundred 4-H club boys and 20

Rutherford County farmers are
showing interest in methods for
checking soil erosion. At a recent
meeting, the extensive losses caused
by rosion were emphasized.
Edgar Auton, Caldwell county 4-H
