Advertising rates furnished by re quest FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 1935. THIS WEEK'S BIBLE THOUGHT OUR INHERITANCE: The Lord knoweth the days of the upright; and their inheritance shall be for ever. Psalm 37:18. "THOU SHALT NOT KILL" "Please observe the law and avoid arrest," is the appeal made by Mayor E. L. Reed, who announces on the front page of The Perquimans Week ly that the Police Department of Hertford is making a special effort to enforce the traffic laws. This is good news. The traffic laws should be more strictly enforc ed. Too many persons habitually disregard the regulations and en danger the lives of themselves and others. Particularly do they drive too fast. Instead of the twenty-mile rate allowed by law, too many mo torists drive on Hertford's streets at twice this rate. There were 36,000 persons killed in this country last year in automobile Accidents, and nearly a million were injured. North Carolina's contribu tion to this appalling record was shocking. There were 837,000 pedes trians struck by cars in this country last year, 16,000 of whom died as a result There were 381,000 acci dents in which two cars collided, re sulting in the deaths of 8,500 per sons, to say nothing of instances 1im anrinim injuries resulted but not deaths. Four thousand were killed as a result of cars striking fixed objects, and 1,100 perished in accidents involving cars and trains, a type of accident which is almost in variably the fault of the motorist, and generally due to excessive speed. Drivers who speed in improper places and any town or city street is an improper place for speeding, those who drive on the wrong side of the road, who pass on curves, who fail to give proper signals, and whc are otherwise reckless, menace the life, health and property of others. Excessive speed is said to be mainly responsible for the ghastly record made lr.st year. Not only does excessive speed cause the bulk of the accidents, but it also tends tc make the consequences of such acci dents more sere:.;. Somebody has wisely said "The heavy foot on the accelerator is the best friend the Dark Angel has." Mayor Reed does well to give specific warning to speeders.
