... t"' . J . ' p 4 i - 1 '11.' AiB; six THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, HERTFORD, N. 0. FRIDAY, JULY 23,1943 1 1 ' ' i S. ' OPA Officials Say CHAPANOKE NEWS Getting "Tighter The tire situation two or three months is going to be "tight," officials of Price Adminis tration said today. The reason is quite simply statea: There are. very few tires available. Illustrating the situation, OPA of ficials pointed out that approximate ly 10,000 unfilled applications for tires were carried over from June to July in the Raleigh district alone. Most of the available rubber is going into tires for the armed forces, officials explained. This is particu larly true of truck tires. And while synthetic rubber is now being manu factured, it is being made in such limited quantities as hardly to affect the situation. Relief, due to synthe tic rubber, is hardly to be expected for three months, or perhaps longer. To the average motorist the OPA can offer just one tit of assistance. About 6,000,000 tires, taken in by the government several months ago, are available for the nation as a whole, and will be shipped to dealers this month. They are termed "emer gency" or "twilight" tires, because most of them are of no value except for emergency purposes. Persons in serioQs need of tires can get these "emergency" casings, on a Grade 3 certificate, and, by nursing them along, can get a few miles, or per haps a few hundred miles, out of them. The ceiling price on these tires is $1. Most of the tires issued this montn will be of this type. Mrs. Hattie Edge, of Norfolk, Va., SDent several days this week with Mrs. W. H. Elliott. D. N.
