Annual Pruning"
No' fruit plant is more frequently
neglected in orunins: than the Musca
dine grape, says C. F. Williams, hor
ticulturist with the Agriculture Ex
periment Station at State College.
This plant, of which tne Scuppernong,
James and Thomas are varieties, is
relatively simple to prune, if it is
done every year. The time to prune,
he says, is between now and New
Year's. ,
The principles of the pruning pro
cess are simple, and they remain the
same no nutter how the vine are
trained. In the grape, the fruit is
bore on green shoots of the present
season, and these shoots come from
buds on the wood of the previous
season's growth. Thus, it is that if
a vine is not pruned, the greater part
of this growth is at the outer parts
of the vine, and the fruiting wood of
As these growing parts of the
plant become, further from the root
system, the vine loses 1U vigor and
tue t iu canes die until the vine itself
becd rs unproductive.
The pruning operation is simpie.
Start with a newly set vine, and
maintain .-'vigorous growth with ter
tiluer and cultivation. In the early
winter after each growing season,
for the first two or three years, select
the desired framework, depending.'
upon whether u is w oe supporceu
by a trellis or arbor, and then prune
off all the rest.

T least one time In the year we can be happy. The con
tpntmenr and eniovment of abundant life is greatly in
evidence at this one season of the year Christmas On this great
significant occasion we need to lean toward those things for which
Christmas stands.
We need the spiritual help that comes from associations and
thoughtfulness of loved ones and friends. It tends to o Her encour
agement to us after the experiences of the year filled with .unsettled
conditions, with sacrifices, and in many cases unhappiness.
Let us remember those
things for which Christmas
stands, obtaining from these
remembrances the confi
dence that will enable us to
meet the problems of the
future with heads unbowed.
May1 we wish you a happy
season for this and many
more years to come.
