A H V I . . I ?r iv l JESUS AMD THE LAW OF LOVE international Sunday" ' School Lesson for September 29 ' ' .. '."! "I"1' A Golden Text: "Love frbrketn'W ill to his neighbor; love therefor is the fulfillment 13:10. of the Jew." Romans With this lesson, we bring to a close this quarter's series of lessons on the Ten Commandments in the light of -the teachings., of Jesus. The teaching of Jesus marks, out with perfect clearness the great principles of the moral life and, as he declared, he is the fulfillment of the Old Tes tament law, not the destroyer. Someone has declared that ''the Ten Commandments serve as a mea suring stick by which We can measure our spiritual growth; When' placed by our lives, they serve as a 'straight edge' to point out thl crooked places. The thing that causes our spiritual growth and makes a straight life is something that is within us. This thing is love: love for God and love for man., 1 It may be partly acquired by heredity, but it comes largely by our own efforts and by yielding to H'c will v with aU the mind and with all. the heart involves a reverence for God's wisdom, a boundless truBt in God's goodness, a glad obedience to God's will, and a genuine. low fort God's Children. Thus our love lor God finds expression In our love for our fellow men. . , , i.iWf. It is very difficult for; us to obey completely the Ten Commandments. Probably ho person has Ipe strength in himself toobey them fulty at all timesr-s Our, mind goes immediately to-' the-young Shan whtf cnnw tt Jesus to ask the way of eternal life and Jesus questioned him as to his obe dience to thei Commandments. The Lyoung man stated that he had kept the commandments from childhood and still, in hie J own heart, he rea lised that something was missing. From his subsequent actions, we are led to believe that he had obeyed the letter of the law without the true spirit of obedience. What he lacked was love love for his fellowmen to the extent that he was willing to de prive himself of his own luxuries and, if heed be, to suffer for their sakes. Grudging obedience or obedience through .fear of consequent punish ment for disobedience v is not the true spirit of obedience. Forced obedi ence cannot be lasting. We can obey completely in spirit only when we desire to obey. Desire linked with determination will produce strong re solve to act. God's commandments are seldom kept unless there is de termination in our hearts to obey his laws. Coupled with desire and de- ghr Us lif without hut, (or his country ana for the sake of those h loves. Real love taswlnslLy 11 Paul declares:' Love woiketn no ill'-to. his neighbors."' SblAahneSS gives' rise to many evils, such as ttn truthfulness, theft, murder, adultery, icovetousness, and many other sinful acts.. It feeds the flame of suspicion, jealousy, hatred, And conflict, But love overcomes evil with good. He who really loves hat no' room in his heart for fear and suspicion,' preju dices; or hatred, '' Love inspires con fidence, sympathy, ' tenderness and Let us strive to cultivate in our hearts and lives the spirit of love as described by Paul in his famous "Love Chapter,", I Corinthians 13, John Burroughs has said: "Love is the great preserver, while hate, envy, jealousy are the "real destroyers; to keep your hearts young, keep them fun of love." The first principle of Christian termination, thore must be a spirit moral ideal is love. Jesus taught '0I dependence upon God to direct our that the whole moral life is summed lives into what he wouU them up in the association of the love of, We in our own strength, are too wean to accomplish this for our selves. The real foundation for obedience is the great power of love. Love makes it easy for a child to obey its parents. Love will make a person go through any danger or to any trouble for the one leved. Patriotism, which is love in one of its most unselfish forms, will inspire a young man to God with the love of one's fellow man. Paul taught that to love one's neighbor as oneself is to fulfill the whole law. The supremacy of love in the moral idea) is made clear in the New Testament by the teaching that love is an attribute of God himself, for "God is. love" (I John 4:8). The di vine imperative is'Thciu shalt love the Lord thy Ged with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind" and "thou shalt love thjr neighbor as thyself (Matthew 22: 37-39. This commandment covers the whole life, including every area and relationship, every aspiration and responsibility of man. Good Weather For Maying Hay -"' " " Crop conditions Were fair to good throughout the State during the first week of September and" have been particularly favorable for har vesting hay, it is reported by the Federal-State Crop Reporting Ser vice. The initial week of this month was dry and cool but in most Pied mont and Mountain sections the soil continued too dry and hard for fall plowing, but in the southeast some progress in fall planting was re ported. Rainfall- was very light for the week, falling mostly toward the close of the week with State-wide averages only a tenth of an inch or less. This dry weather was favorable for cot ton and some has already been pick ed and. ginned. Boll weevil damage1 continues to affect yields in the southern Piedmont section. Milk production continued at a high level during this cool period and production for September 1 wag 14 pounds per cow. Total State pro duction of 144,000 during August re flects the relatively cool weather dur ing the past few weeks and the good condition of most pastures. Fruits continued in good condition throughout the State and apple har vesting is increasing in Volume in some of the western counties. Burley tobacco is reported fair to good. Some has been harvested but the cool w iather has prevented much burley from maturing. Harvesting flue-cured tobacco is practically com plete with conditions reported as fair to good. r rjisnlMll9-" YOUR HOME, YOUR SAVINC& YOUR EARNINGS FOB YEARS TO COME .
