". -- a Lesson Text: Ezekiel 1:1-3 j l - .' 8:11, I7;21 4:1-8 For the next three months, we will have a course of study in Old Testa ment History covering vthe captivity , of the Israelites and the' return of the -Jews 'front exite, taken from the Books of Erekiel, paniel, Eira, Nehe miah, Esther, Haggs.il, Zachariah and Kalacht :, v J About the year 697 ,B. C, the Baby tomans carried Into exile the largest asd most" influential group of Jewish captives, . among .them being" King eboiachin and the prophet, Ezekiel, , who was to become the foremost pro phet and religious leader of the exile. : ' . , " While we do not know much about ' Ezekiel, it is believed that he was . of high rank, the ton of a priest and probably trained to . be a religious ' leader. He ranks with the great pro phets of the Old Testament and is - regarded by many as the parent of tattex-day Judaism; . While the life of the Jewish people, ; as exiles, was not particularly burden 7 some, they naturally longed for the . time to come when they could return . to their own land and to their beloved . Jerusalem; For a time, there was a spirit of optimism among them, be t tieving that the dire prophecies of Jeremiah would not be fulfilled and ' they would soon be able to go home. However, when news came to them , that Jerusalem1 had been destroyed and with it, the temple ialso was de "'; mollshed, the V people realized the "; truths of the prophecies of Jeremiah and the teaching of Ezekiel and were convinced, finally that because of their sins - against God they were being punished.' - , - Even though he .knew his messages were very unpopular with the people and often -preached to willfully deaf i ears, Ezekiel continued to deliver the message; which he received from-God himself. The messages were not such as to give pleasure to his - hearers, but he had the courage to say the - things he believed God, ' wanted him to say. God set him up as a watch r ' mas to the people to deliver warn ings to ; them in. times of danger .. evetfv though they didn't want to be warned. So today God warns h's people of the dangers which follow their drifting away from him, their . failure to obey his laws and of follow ing their own pleasures and desires. f Eieldel : felt deeply' hie respon sibility as a spokesman for God. His was the task of warning the children of Israel of the grave because of their , wickedness. ; Although Us was the task of warning, Ms was hot the guilt if they failed to heed his words. , J, EL Jowett declares: "We have J, Mil 1 ' AW - " I 1 ' mjk ill . : A : if. , Perquiihais Church Services HERTFORD BAPTIST CHURCH C W. Then she quoted the lines of a jingle that ran: The short, the fat, the lean, the toll, I don't give a rap, I love them oil. That was the way she felt about people. The real test of Christian love Is how wide it is. Does It Include every person you know? Anyone can love his friends or the people who agree with him In customs, ideals, traits, and Interests. But how do you feel toward o person who differs from you In personal ho bits, speech, dispo sition, religion, or social philisophy? Christian love encompasses your enemies, those who have hurt your friends, those who are peculiar, those who misunderstand you, and those who are unlovely. Nothing so breaks down barriers as love. It mokes vou get acquainted with people. Robert Browning says, , Yes: and "love" Is a short word that soys so very much! It says that you confide in me. BAGLEY SWAMP PILGRIM -Coy S.
