J MM SCHOOL j LESSON : s ' : ; 9 I Zechariah Pleads For Righteousness International Sunday School Lesson 1 For April 25th, 1948 ' Golden Text;" "Execute true judg ment, and show kindness and compas sion1 every man to his - brother." Zechariah 7:9. Lesson Text: -Zechariah 1:1-4; I 7:8-14; 8:16,17 j In our lesson discussion last week, I we learned that the Israelites return-! "ed from exile in Babylon to the des- elated city of Jerusalem and of their .feeble attempts to rebuild the temple. TTia temnlm.was. the center of the Jew's religious life and the symbol i of God's presence with them, so its rebuilding was very important in I their lives. Although they abandoned I th work for fourteen years at Hag-1 gai's urging, they began the work, agaip and finished its construction, v Next week, we shall learn how the returned exiles, under the leadership of Nehemiah, rebuilt the walls around Jerusalem. Our lesson for this week comes in between these two great en terprises. Zechariah, the grandson of the prophet Iddo, realized that while the building of a temple for the worship of God was very important, there was something even more im portant than that -the moral and ethical condition of the people them selves. Thus, it was Zechariah's mission to try to teach the people the way that God would have them live. Pointing out the causes of the rec ent exile of their fathers, Zechariah declared that it was their failure to heed the warnings of the prophets of farmer Hnva to forsake their sinful wavs and turn- to God. As a result, p God allowed them to be taken into captivity, exiled in a foreign land and their beloved city of Jerusalem, with its magnificent temple, utterly de stroyed. . Anxious that the new generation be an improvement over the old, Zechariah called the people to repent ance, saying that God had declared, "Return unto me, and I will return unto you." As a matter of fact, this is the great theme of the" Book of Zechariah: "The one thing essential to God's forgiveness is man's repent ance." It is an amazing fact of his tory that God, in his patience, raises up for every generation prophets to inin hia word of warninsr or invita tion Th neonle in Zechariah's time needed theswarjiing and so does every! nation on the lace or tne gioDe toaay. Zwhariah was as anxious as Hag gai to see the temple rebuilt, jbut Zechariah realized that unless the neonle themselves turned to God jn rnntjince.1 the dedication of a new temple would be more hypocrisy and- a hollow mockery. Formal - religion is not enough; Samuel warned, "Man looketh on the outwar 1 appearance, but God looketh on the heart." u Obed ience to God, reverence for his stand ards of life and faith in the heart are ' pleasing to .Him. ' f;j A: The prophet pointed out explicitly what God's standards of life are: True justice tempered by mercy, a comoaaaionate attitude : toward one's brother, care lor tne widows ana tne 1 ' UA ;1J t:.i mwf.1 I nnn ftnyvVVli-iVi mmrnm.
