Clarence W. Phillips, president, called the meeting to order. The-club members and guests sang America and the (Fledge ox Allegiance to .the Flag led by District Governor Elgin White jM Elizabeth City. I. C. Ya gel, chaplain of he club, gave the in vocation, y i Roy S. Chappell, vice president of the club, gave the address of welcome and Mrs. E. T. Phillips responded for the ladies. The president then recognized the guests present ' District . Governor White spoke briefly to the group and said: "One year ago I helped organize the Bethel Ruritan Club, meeting with, a group at that time in the Bethel Baptist Church. I saw the seed sown and it makes me very happy to see what you have accomplished in little over a year. You have a real Ruritan Club, may God bless you, keep up -the good work." , j Humorous entertainment was fur nished by Charlie Ward, past presi dent of the club, program chairman for the banquet In a cracker eatinir content. Mra. Jfde, White won first prize, a pair of nylon stockings. Participating an the 'Contest were Mrs. Johnnie Phillips, ,Mrs. -E. T. Phillips, Mrs. Ernest Long, Mrs. Irvin Long, Mrs. Wade Jordan, Mrs. Joe White and Mrs. Edgar Lone, Members of the group were given four crackers each to eat, and the first one nnigmng was to signal with a whistle. Mrs. Joe White managed a dry whistle first and was followed by Mrs.1 Irvin Long, Mrs. Ernest Long and Mrs. Wade Jordan. Mrs. Ward then presented the group with a small gift neatly wrapped in white paper Sand tied with ribbon for being the nrst zour to nmsn wnn the crackers. ' Upon- opening the packages the ladies nearly fainted to see four more crackers, each already as dry as a powder house. However, they were all - good sports and the program Chairman gave them a break and ruled that the first one to finish one of the crackers would be the winner of the nylons. Mrs. Joe White was the first again to whistle. Mr aqd Mrs. Lloyd Evans and Mr. and Mrs. Julian Long were the parti cipants in a banana eating contest. Each was blind-folded and switched around until they didn't know who they , were feedings the banana, to. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Evans wei the winners in this contest, and were pre sented a very, lovely and useful gift. Following the entertainment by SWard, prizes were awarded the ladies whose names were drawn from a basket Guest speaker, Peter Carlton, of the Chamber of Commerce of Eden ton; spoke to the grodp, presenting a highly entertaining talk interspersed Witjt humor,T entering into a more serious vein at intervals. The Perquimans County ' High School FFA parliamentary procedure team won ton honors .and - took first place in the Districts Parliamentary 'Procedure Contest held at Tarboro on Saturday, May 15, in competition with seven "other teams in District One, which covers most of Eastern North Carolina. . This achievement entitles the Perquimans " FFA i;" team ' to take part in. the State Parliamentary fro cerfurA Contest to be held at N. C. State College, Raleigh, on' June 15, and to comnete for the $200 prize to be given to the State winning team. The members of the Parliamentary Pro cedure team are: President, Dolan Winslfw; vice president Bob Lay den; secretary, Leon Lane; treasurer, Trafton Phillips, and reporter, John Ayscue. H. S. Students Elect New Council Officers Students of Perauimans High School elected officers of the school's student council at an election held at the school last week. Betty Kuth Chappell was elected -president of the council, Rouald Butt, .vice president; Ethel Frances Elliott, secretary; Anne Hollowell, treasurer and Bob Layden, sergeant-at-arms. The students conducted the elec tion along regular political lines with cAnflfdatea for the various offices making campaign speeches and the balloting was handled by student ap pointed election boards.
