Many Tyrrell Formers
Entering C6nt Contest
Tyrrell County farmers are 'show
ing great deal of interest in a 1948
corn growing1 contest being sponsored
measure off the plots daring; the snmi
met or early, fall. .Each farmed
should gather , the corn from the
measured plots between September
25 and October 20.

by the Columbia Rotary Club, reports per acre will be entertained by the

P.- Cheatnutt, assistant agent for the
- State College Extension Service. ",
A total o 177 farmers.entered the
contest and have been personally vis
ited by the agents to date. .-
Purposes of the contest are to raise
the average county corn yield to 45
bushels per' acre and to .determine
whether 75 to 100 bushels per acre
can be produced economically.
Tyrrell business Bqma are cooperat
ing with the Rotary Club in donat
ing the following five top prizes which
will be awarded on the basis of
yields: First, medal and $100 sav
ings bond; second, $75 worth of house
paint and oil; third, one ton of fertil
izer; fourth, $25 worth . of lumber;
fifth, half a ton of 7-7-7 fertilizer.
At least one acre of corn must be
grown. It is recommended that one
acre of hybrid and one acre of field
corn be planted side by side in the
same square and treated1 alike, to
give a check on the value of hybrids
on the individual fam.' ; ,
The county agent or assistant agent
will visit each demonstration and
