1.JLJ.&J LY, HERTFORD, N. C, tIDAY, OCTOBER 8, liW8. rAQ& SJEVEiv MY SCHOOL LESSON - BIOGRAPHY IN THE BIBLE International Sunday School Lesson For October 10 Church Services Golden Text: "In all thy ways ac knowledge him, and he will direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:6. Lesson 12:1-8. Text: Genesis 11:31-32; . As pointed out in our lesson for last week, this quarter's series of les-" sons will give us an opportunity to study the Bible from a different angle. From early childhood, we have learned about the various char acters in the Old Testament Abra-i ham, Isaac, Jacob, Esau, Joseph, David, Jonathan to mention only a few. An interesting fact to keep in mind about the biographies in the Bible, is that' there is no effort to hide the faults and failures of its he roes. . It does.not attempt to "glamor ize or glorify" them, but gives us all the details, good and bad. Sir Wal ter Scott has said: "Biography is the most interesting, perhaps, of any spe cies of composition, but it loses all its interest with me when the shades and lights of the principal characters are not accurately and faithfully detailed. I can no more sympathize with a mere eulogist than I can with the ranting hero upon he' sage." Of course, in one lesson' we could not give even a short sketch "of the main characters in the Bible. But we are given one example of real bio graphy that of Abram, 'later known as Abraham. Dr. Alexander Whyte, in his character study of Abraham, Bays, "Of no mortal man but of Abra ham alone does Almighty God ever speak and say, He was My friend." Of course, this is the highest tribute that could be paid to any man. Abraham was also called the "father of the faithful." Such a man inspires faith in others, and apart from faith, no man can see God. In seeking to interpret Abraham's char acter, Prof. A. B. Davidson says: "Abraham went out on an unknown way, in search of an unknown herit age. He believed that the heritage existed, he believed that God would bring him to it, and he cast himself upon him to show him the way. But it is his ignorance that the Scripture magnifies. Faith is belief in God amidst- ignorance. It is trusting God in the dark. And how great the darkness was, on a way which none had trod in his day. All he knew was .fited;. ,that-was the only -Arm point' he had. And even his knowl edge of God wa3 faith. By faith he knew God; by faith he ibelieved God, ' by faith he committed himself to an unknown way toward an unknown land. This was faith. Worthy was he to be called the father of the faithful." wniie ADranam stands as the ex ample of the pioneer who, under God's command, goes out by faith, not knowing whither he is gping, there have been many others since Abraham's time - who have shown staunch faith in face of difficulties. Men of faith have existed in every age and time will prove that such men and women exist today. History points out many in the past-who have proven tneir faith such men as (Concluded on Page Two) Money in the BAN f v jr-limj UU! , r-i'i " i BOO DDI if'" i i mini Mi m miii si mi iitftf ' "' This lad has "money in the bank" and Is proud of his financial independence. He delivers newspapers and does other odd jobs to turn a few extra pennies. He acquired two useful habits in his early child hoodwork and thrift. Through these he is able to pay his own way, have his own spending money, and put something aside each week as savings. Boys like him are not very apt to be found in trouble. They do not spend their spare time in idle ness and among the wrong kind of associates, but divide it between recreation and useful work. Three elements are essential in any logical solu tion of our juvenile delinquency problem religious training, healthy recreation, and useful employment. Give a child these and he will steer a safe course. The most important of these is religion faith in God and humble obedience to the teachings of His Holy Word. THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . . ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church la the greatest fac tor on earth for the building ol character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survtve. There are four sound reason! why every person should attend service regularly and sup port the Church. They are: (1) For Mi own take. (2) For his children'! lake. (3) For the sake of hli community and nation. (4) For the sale of the Church Itself, which needs hi! moral and ma terial support. Plan to go to church regularly and read your Bible daily.
