LESSOU . ' 9 TRAINING THE TWELVE International Sunday School Lesson For March 20 Memory Selection: "Every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks, it will be opened." Luke 11:19-. Lesson Text: Mark 6:30-32; Luke 11:1-4, 9-13. At. the time of this lesson, the twelve disciples had just returned from a preaching tour of the country side and, full of enthusiasm for the things which they had witnessed, they were anxious to tell Jesus "all things, whatsoever they had done, and whatsoever they had taught." Jesus, ever solicitous for their wel fare, suggested that they go with him to a quiet place, where they could rest and have time for private con sultations with him, for the popular ity of Jesus had grown to such a place that there was no time for lei sure, or even time for them to eat. The rest and quiet was not for long, because the eager crowds, seeing that the disciples had taken a boat and gone over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, followed by land and soon arrived where the little group were. Jesus, moved with sym pathy for the people, ministered un to their needs and preached unto them until the eventide and then fol lowed the feeding of the five thous and. Probably realising that their lives lacked the power that was evident in the life of Jesus and seeing the won derful result which came to Jesus as he prayed, the disciples asked Jesus ' to teach them to pray. While they, as devout Jews, had been required to recite daily eighteen sets of prayers of considerable length, or if hindered by press of business, a summary of them, the followers of Jesus realized that they did not know how to pray. In reply to their request, Jesus tells them how his followers ought to pray. What we have come to call the "Model Prayer," or the "Lord's Prayer," is given more fully in the sixth chapter of Matthew. After warning against hypocritical prayer, Jesus says, "When . ye pray, say: "Father." This suggests a filial re lationship of the believer with God, an intimate father-son consultation. "Hallowed be thy name" is a .request that the name of God, his revelation or our conception of God, is to be .holy, reverenced, or so exalted on earth as it is in heaven. Charles Kingsley says if God's will were done on earth as in heaven, "It would abolish all . the vice of the world, and therefore the misery which -springs from vice. Ah, that God's will were but done on earth as it is in the material heaven overhead, in perfect order and obedience, as the stars roll in their courses, without rest, yet without haste; as all cre ated things, even the most awful, fire and hail, snow and vapor, wind and storm, fulfill God's word, who hath made them sure for ever and ever, and given them a law which shall riot be broken. -But above them, above the divine and wonderful order of the material 'universe, and the. winds') which are God s angels, and the (Concluded on Page Two) OFT BE CROSS J ' SIM wm J j CHUBCH FOR All . . . It has stood the test of time; it has weathered the storms of adversity and oppres sion always triumphant' This" gives men hope. For life travels in a strange cyclic pattern of births and deaths. Little in human relations is intelligible, little shows progress. Nations rise and fall, battles are fought and won, only to be reenacted time and time again across the stage of history until the whole scheme of life seems meaningless and futile. But always there is the Cross I Whether it be of massive stone or delicate gold and silver, still it gives men that courage and purpose which are so necessary for success ful living in this perplexing world. You can find this strength of the Cross in your church. Plan to at tend worship services next Sunday, and bring your family and friends. rfellMf.B.B.J Be a Better Citizen!
