Hov; many times our lovely outings in the spring and summer have been followed by an infestation of the red bugs or chiggers. We itched and scratched until sometimes we had sores on our bodies. The Journal of the American Medi cal Association published an article on the mites, in which it gave some very good advice. The novice sallies forth' all unprepared, aits on the grass or on a log, comes back infested with the pests. He goes to bed and is kept awake by the itching and scratch ing. He is in for it then. He may put on one of several applications that are soothing enough to afford' him several hours of sleep at a stretch. But, the effective cure is time. The chigger is the six-legged larva of the eight-legged parent that spends her winters under ground and on low plants. In the Spring the eggs are deposited on the ground. In four weeks they hatch. The little red dev ils pour forth and lie in waiting for a host on which-to settle. The creat ures are parasites. They live by suck ing the life fluid of the animals which they light upon. - , Man seems to be their favorite host as you find to your sorrow when you have spent several delightful nours roaming and sitting in the great put- doors. Just as you are dropphg off into dreamland the chiggers -turn loose their batteries on you. They begin to dine on your juices,' and in place of your juices, which ithey steal they de posit their irritant digestive ercretions which itch so fiercely. Now let me tell you a little secret. Chiggers mortally - hate sulphur. Therefore, if you would protect your self from the voracious red bugs, sift some sulphur in your shoes before you hie forth to the picnic or prepare to sot on the banks of the streams and lakes while engaged in the delightful oc cupation of fishing. Better dust your whole body with sulphur before igoing on the nicnic. If you took no precautions and be came infested, try applying kerosen' to the itchy areas. Then get ,into tub of hot water and scrub your en tire body with soap. Rubbing alcohol is heipiui in allaying nenmg u you roolv it to the bites and follow it with boric acid ointment, :or 1 to 2 per cent of carbolic acid. , . Plain gasoline or carbon tetrachlor ide swabbed on with gauze or cotton is eiiective in reducing tne ixcnwg. Be careful in handling the gasoline. Tetrachloride is not inflammable.' r Be cautious about scratching. You can do yourself grei4 harm in this way "by infecting youiJf . 1 Poultry Council Is Formed In State 'i ' 1 ::'v4; :;A - Union County poultryman, HY Ber nard Helms or Monroe, has been elect ed president of the organized Poultry Council of ,ryrti Carolina) according to C.
