This will not b ac complished by penny-pinching -economy or by tax reductions designed to persuade timid business jmen tf go ahead with progressive programs. It centers around intelligent efforts - to revive world trade and to create econ omic conditions that will ' boom in ternational commerce higher ' than ever before. , . ' Historic Treaty; History was written in Washington last thursday when the United States Senate, by an overwhelming vote, ap proved the signing of the North At lantic treaty, which now places this nation in alliance with a number of European powers for the purpose of common defense against wars. The approval of this treaty was a com plete departure from the United States' foreign policy of foregoing en tangling alliances in time of peace. What the adoption of this historic treaty, will lead to remains to be seen in the years to come. It may stop agression but this we doubt, in asmuch as hundreds of treaties, signed by European nations, in cen turies past have failed in this objec tive. While the treaty ds not a -secret one, it's terms were debated for hours in the Senate, the obligations now as sumed by the United States remains somewhat obscure. We believe that only time and world conditions will provide the people of the United States with the full details that this treaty entails. It does provide that in the event one signer of the treaty is attacked, the other signers shall come to the help of the victim, and .take steps to halt the agression. It also provides that the United States shall aid the other nations, allied- through this treaty, by supplying arms to the member nations to aid in building up the defensive strength of the area. Throughout history treaties, such as the North Atlantic Fact, have been made between families, tribes, and nations for common protection against aggression, some were successful for periods of time while others failed in their purposes. With the world growing smaller and smaller, through the advancement of transportation and science, it is the hope of peace loving people that this historic treaty may be the one that will provide security from agression in the years ahead.' The Way To Prevent Another Depression Speaker Sam Ray burn, of Texas, has doubts about the existence of a recession. The Texan says that when 58,000 000 people are employed in industry and 80,000,000 farmers- have money to buy what they need, he does not see how anybody can call it a "reces sion." There is something to what Mr. Rayburn says. Undoubtedly, the na tion will not go back to its pre-war level but, just the same, it will not .maintain its economic 'level close to the top of tiie war-time boom. While there are many, economists who predict a serious' depression for the United States, one should . not overlook the difference between con ditions today and those that7 existed after World War I. The Government continues to spend billions of dollars and the people of the nation have managed to set aside "something for a rainy day." , . We do not think that a depression Sunburn Can Be Fatal The death of a twenty-four-year old man from sunburn is , reported from another state and the tragedy should serve to warn all persons, and especially fair-skinned people, . that it can be dangerous to expose one's self unduly to the rays of the sun, It is not always the brightness of the sun that causes fatal bunrs. On slightly overcast days, tiie solar rays can filter through and be 83 power ful as the bright sunlight O '.''"'-' We do not know too much about the rays of the sun other than that they are extremely powerful. Some patients are exposed to the rays of the sun for treatment, especially tu berculosis victims, but it is safe to assume that if beneficial results can be secured, there is the possibility of harmful effects. We do not go into the question of pigmentation, which explains why some people are easily sunburned and others are not It is well for every body to be temperate in exposure un til well-tanned. No School Planned For State Patrolmen The State Highway Patrol plans no school for patrolmen during 1949, Col. C. R. (Tony) Tolar, commanding, said today. Generally a patrol school is held each year to train men to replace p&tixtmeh who have dropped out during the year. Col. Tolar said that the Patrol had had applications for re-instatement from a sufficient number of former members who had been in the armed services to bring the unit up to its authorized strength of 423 by September 1 without con ducting a patrol school. Col. Tolar added that his office had received numerous applications recently from young men in the State seeking to join the Patrol. He stated that these applications will be placed in the active file and when future vacancies occur in sufficient number to warrant a patrol school, these ap plicants will be given first considera tion. : The Patrol is a unit of the Depart ment of Motor Vehicles.
