THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, HERTFORD, N. l. FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 1949. On - Fcrm Sag 11711 n:,i nMHM iir. il uv Agricultural statisticians of Virginia and North Carolina plan, the .most extensive corn yield study ever made . in the two states to settle the Hssue of who wins the corn production contest, say officials of the State College Extension Service and the North Carolina Department of Agri culture. " The corn contest happens to coin cide with a' new corn yield study being started under the Research and Marketing Act. Frank Parker, chief 'of the Federal-State Reporting Ser vice in North Carolina and leader of the new project, describes it as the "first large scale study to get ac curate measures on corn yields." "Corn is one crop for which we have a very poor check on yield," Parker says. "For cotton we have a very good check through the gin ners. For tobacco, we have a good check through, the warehouse reports. But in the case qt corn, so much of it is fed on the farm, that there is . reaHy no way to check except to go to the farm and take a sample." Accordingly, some 3,000 farms picked at random in North Carolina will be visited this fall by "numera tors" of Mr, Parker's staff. A num erator will be appointed in each of the 39 counties that grow corn in quantity. In most cases, these men will be local residents qualified to .take the samples. The samples will be representative of the State, with a greater number of samples being tak en in the, heaviest corn-producing counties. The survey will 'begin in the eastern part of the State about mid-September and will movfe west as the cron matures. Numerators will forwardS their reports to the Institute of Sta tistics at State College where the data will be compiled. , PAGE THREE BEREA CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR MEETS The Christian Endeavor of the Berea Church of Christ held it regu lar monthly meeting Friday night, August 12, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Delvina Eure. Smth., , ". . , ' LOOKING AT WASHINGTON (Continued from Page Two) free peoples in Europe began a year ago when Britairf, France and the Benelux countries signed the Brus sels Pact. At the time, these people understood that they were not strong enough to prevent the Russian from running roughshod over their coun tries and, consequently, a stronger combination of nations was required to balance the overwhelming strength of Russia. Such a combination has been brought together in the North Atlan tic Pact, which includes most of the free peoples of the world and tends to combine their effective fighting power for a common purpose and a common defense. It is very improtant that the United States, which has ratified the Pact, should implement it by prompt ly extending all reasonable militarv assistance to the nations which hava joined in a common defense policy. The details of the arms program can be well left to the judgment of the men who head our military establish ment. They will not approve a pro gram which will weaken us and the fact that they endorse the present DroDOSal is evidence that t.hpv reo-arrl the Atlantic Pact as an additional security for the UnitedS tates. DIVIDENDS BETTER THAN IN 1948 Cash dividends, publicly reported, are running somewhat higher than in 1948. accordinar to fitrures of the Commerce Department which reports mat dividends of this type constitute about two-thirds of all dividends paid in this country. For the three months ending- Mav 31st, dividends totalled $1,373,300,000. This was ten per cent above the same period of 1948. It indicates, according to the experts, that corporations are paying out a greater proportion of their earnings to stockholders than they did last year.
