SHU' PEEQUMAKS . VEZLLY, Kiiii.fi- vii, li. C, I .IIDA i", , A VACATION TRAVELOGUE By Mrs. L. J. Winslow As a lover of history and nature my days from August 1st to August 7th were filled with awe and admira tion. At 5 a. m.( August 1st, my daugh ter, Mrs. R. M. White, husband and two children of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. J. L. Nixon of Winfall, and I left by auto for a tour through some of the scenic, industrial, and historic regions of our Eastern country. The term ination of which was to be Niagara Palls and parts of Canada. By kindness of the Tidewater A. A. A., Norfolk, a suggested route was planned for the party. Beginning at Belvidere on 37, through on 32 to Suffolk, Va., we took 460 to Petersburg and to "Rich mond on the James" where with . Mrs. Nixon's son we had breakfast. Then on No. 1 to Fredericksburg. Here we viewed the National Mill-, tary Park and Kenmore. We con tinued on 1 to Washington; lunched on the bank of the Potomac near the famous Cherry trees; rode around around the White House and Blair House and spent some time touring the city. .' " . - Again on 240 to Frederick, Md., most widely known as the home of Barbara Frichie, and of Francis Scott Key, author of "The Star Spangled Banner." Here we saw the Rev olutionary Barracks on the grounds of the Maryland State School for the deaf; also Hood College and the magnificent vie wfrom Gambrill State Park. Then on to .Thurmont, where two Perquimans County sis ters, Mary and Eller White, once kept an Inn. Our next stop was Gettysburg, For Your Convenience May We Suggest That If you have any prescriptions that were filled by our of town stores . . . You bring the prescription number and I name of store to us and we can get a copy of your prescription for you and will be able to fill it here at any time you wish, the same way your doctor ordered it to be filled. S and M Pharmacy "Your Prescription Store" ON THE CORNER HERTFORD, N. C. Pa., where we ate and slept onf the battlefield.'. The beautiful Rose Garden Cabins welcomed us for the night. Hre the decisine battle of the' Civil War was fought. Part of . the famous battlefield is now a National Park of 2,547 acres. Here we visited the house where Abraham Lincoln spent twenty-six hours and while there wrote his immortal ' Gettys burg address. . Follow ing the Susguhanna Trail, we soon' arrived at the Capitol City of, Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, named for John Harris, founder, who es tablished here in 1710 an Indian trading post In the midst of high mountains and beautifu valleys, we followed the Trail through Sunbury on to Wil liams Fort, the metropolis of central Pennsylvania, where on our return trip wo. spent the night at "City View Haven". At Lawranceville we crossed the state line into New York and traveled on to Corining, the home of the Conning Glass Works, largest plant of its kind in the world. Painted Post, a suburban town, gets its name from a post erected there, and stained with color by the Indians. During our stop at Cohocto, we learned it was the home of the world's largest Buck Wheat Mills. In this area we saw many wheat fields, also acres and acres of various HERTFORD HARDWARE & SUPPLY CO. Also are large dairy farms with neat,' at tractive barns.'.-- As we entered Buffalo, we were thrilled with the beauty of Delaware Park. ThJs is a great manufacturing city and one of the - ten ,. largest ports in the world. In this city, William McKinley died, and Theodore Roosevelt took the oath of offi t. -v,.- . -. '.- T-.v.- After refreshing at "Uruncie"; Ni agara City, N. Y., we crossed over the International Rainbow Bridge in to Niagara Falls, Canada, where at the entrance we were greeted with lovely gardens, and the chimes from the CariJlion Town playing the beauti ful hymn, "In the Garden." Along with the many thousands of visitors the evening of. our arrival, as we stood before the great, mighty roar of the Falls and tried to take in some of the grandeur and beauty of ihem, we received one of the greatest ihrills of our lives. Words can never express the wonr der and beauty of them, it has to be seen with the" naked eye, and felt with the pureheart. As I stood and slowly viewed them, I could not help but repeat over and over in my mind the first verses of Psalm 19. About midway of the Strait tcis great flow of soft blue water drops 160 feet and plunges with mighty thunders and millowery of spray into the gorge. This water slips over the enbankment and rush es away to the sea via Lake On tario and the St. Lawrance Rive. ' The writer, a lover of flowers, im mensely enjoyed the many exquisite and extensive floral displays through out the park, especially alongside the Falls.
