Gray Is Appointed Extension Forester Appointment of John L. Gray to Bucceed Robert W. Graeber as exten sion forester at State College was an nounced this week by Dr. I. 0, Schaub, director of the Agricultural Extension Service. Graeber retired effective Janiiary 1 . after having served as extension forester since 1926. Gray; a native of Fairfax County, Virginia, received a B. S. in forestry at Pennsylvania State College in 1941 and a Master's degree in the same field ar Yale University in 1942. He served as a timber spotter m 'Arkan sas for seven months before joining the Army Air Corps in November, 1942. . Released from active duty in Sd T ember, 1944, Gray accepted a post as logging superintendent for a concern Li Loretta, Wisconsin. A year later, in October, 1945, he came to North Carolina to . become assistant exten sion forester. He is. a member of AlpWa Zeta, Xi Sigma Pi, and the Society of American Foresters. Graeber, whose retirement was prompted by ill health, was a pioneer in the development of North Caro lina's farm woodlands. He was in strumental in getting a Department of Forestry established in the State College School of Agriculture and was one of the first to take the course which it offered. He also set up several hundred forestry demon strations throughout North Carolina and kept detailed records on each. He has conducted forestry educa tional . meetings in every county in - the State and has trained county agents to give practical assistance to farmers in forest planting, thin ning, pruning, timber scaling, selec tive harvest, and marketing.
