International Sunday School Lesson y, ... for January 15, 1950 ' Memory Selection: "Now thn-com. pany of those who "believed were of! vuv ubwji mhj evui, emu w who saiu that any of the things which he poa , sessed were, his own, hut they had . everything in common." Acts; 32. . Lesson Text: -Acts 2: 42-47; 4: 31-35. : r Artistide wrote about the Christians of his day to the Emperor Hadrian: "They rescue the orphan from him who does him violence, and he who has gives to him who hjs not, without ' grudging,, And if there is a man j among them who is poor or needy and 7 they have an abundance of necessar ies, .they fast two or three days that they may supply the needy with their necessary food." -, . Our lesson today" shows how this spirit started in the early days of the church.' The believers were unselfish enough to be unwilling to hold proper- :- ty while human suffering was unre . lieved Barnabas, for instance, is sriven J I ' special' notice because he sold his , (arm and turned over the proceeds to the apostles to be used for relief. The , apostles utilized this trust fund to , care for those who were in need. y , "There is nothing of modern com- :, monism in all this,", says Alexander Maclaren, "but there is a lesson to the tmoHern church es to the obliga tions of wealth and the claims of bro- , therhood, which is all but universally r. disregarded. "The " spectre of communism is troubling every nation and it will become more and more formidable .unless the church learns to live by the precepts of Jesus and repeat in new formS the spirit of the primitive .church." T, Love for one's fellow mam will make a follower of Christ mindful of the needs of others. Dr. Robert F. ; Horton refers to this service as Christian Socialism and says that I such a' socialist "will labor for the weak and unfortunate; he will seek to alter institutions in the direction of mercy and of justice; he will put pub lic interests before private interests; he will attach more importance to life than to property; and indeed he will limit the righto of property by the in terests of the community. He will ad rmit no rights without corresponding If dutieHl lle will 'defiheir6alfli,"iibf Iff terms oi maienai possessions out in terms of well-beings." - The apostles were primarily preach ers and were unable to give complete attention to the distribution of chari ty. -As Professor G. T; Stokes says of preachers today ;."It is their business to explain the Lord's will, to translate the idea of the Bible into the langu age of modern life, to apply the principles of doctrine and discipline laid down in the Bible to the ever varying wants of our complex modern civilization; and how can this function H discharged unless there be time -. reading and for thinking, so as ij -ain a true notion of what are these modem wants, and to find out how the ' "rnal principles of .'the Scriptures itt to be aDDlied to them." . The verses in Acta given for our oniJ!eration. stress repeatedly; the t:1 ;:tion which these early follow ers had in one another's company. I - I I ' 1 You ought to put into real action that long 'felt desire to do something that will help others. We all have that desireall but the very selfish. We would like to serve. But where? How? One of the contributions which our churches make to the life of this community is in provid ing countless opportunities for valuable service. Can you sing in a choir? Teach a class? Lead t youth group? Visit a shut-in? Pack a gift basket? Paint a Sunday School room? Mend a choir gown? These are humble, yet valuable services. They won't make you famous, but they'll make you a better person. And they'll help others discover tne true riches in life. You ought to do itt You ought to join a church ... and find the service that yr-i can render! "JE CHUHCH POB Alt AUrOHTHECHUHOT wiureh If th ' . ;nw n lour uh.j -.r." W"T fty txro .VZ c- - vnureli.
