Lesson Text: Acts 26: 19.23; Romans
5: 1-8; Hebrews 12: 1-2.
Our scripture reference breaks into
a very dramatic situation. Paul is be
fore King Agrippa, .telling of his
transforming vision on the road to
Pamascus. Then, he goes on to relate
the effect his vision had on his life
and work and, in doing so, revealed
the heart of the Christian religion.
The Apostle Paul's experience be
gan with a vision of the Living
Christ, a vision which led to heroism
and endurance. George A. Gordon, in
the Revelatipn and the Ideal, de
clares: Everywhere today hoslts of
God's people need the faith that sus
tained the apostle. A vision means
the .end for which a good man lives,
'Paul's vision was heavenly, and he
pursued it to the last breath of his
life. His vision sets him apart and
makes him worthy of lifelong study.
The strength, the continuity, and the
(passion of his deyotion to the Ideal
lent distinction to his career. We wish
to know about his vision and its value
f ot men today."
The vision of Christ became Ithe
foundation stone of a sustaining
faith for Paul. This dynamic, faith
changed him from a (persecutor to one
persecuted. The name of Jesus, which
he had carted, became more precious
to him than life itself.
'What was the character of the
faith that "sustained Paul? Bolstered
thy that faith, he had the courage with
stand all kinds of persecution and to
stand before kings to proclaim his be
lief in Jesus Christ Paul's faith was
one that grew out of his knowledge
of the holy scriptures-Moses and the
prophets. .We must remember that
Paul was well learned in the scriptures
of hU day, being c Pharisee. With
came to see that all the marks of the
long Promised Messiah of the Old
Testament were tto be found in Jesus.
In the book of Romans, particularly
the passage given for our considera
tion, Paul, the theologian, the chief
interpreter of Christianity, is dealing
with the problem of sin and holw the
sinner can get right with God and
keep right with him. This "lightness"
alone brings peace. William James,
the psychologist, once wrote about a
man "consciously right, superior, hap
py1" who, by faith, becomes "conscious
ly right, superior happy." ISuch faith
means trusting God for deliverance
through belief in Christ and accept
ance of salvation through his death
on the cross.
The life of a Christian is not a bed
of roses; warns Paul. Paul had learn-
ed through, tribulations of tmany and
varied sorts, that God had used trou
bles to make him a better man. Sor
row or suffering may sweeten and
ennoble, or it may embitter and hard
en. 'The effect defends on the Indi-
vidual himself or herself.' Christ died
lor-the ungodly. He accepted suffer--inar
in order that all those -who believ
ed' in him might escape the suffering
and punishment for their sins.
Paul's sustaining faith was the re
sult of experience. 'Having met Jes-
sua. on the, Damascus joad,, Paul knew,
from that time 'on thai Jesus was ris-

havinar that does not stem from actual
experience.": We should ' remember,
however, that' experience differs for
each "individual. For most f lis, there
no . climatic event like-hat which
convinced Paul of the Itruth of -Christ
